His recent collections have very strong and sometimes almost literal interpretations of music genres and musicians.
I am not sure if that has always been the case with his collections but his collaborations with musicians go way back.
He is known for using multiple cultural influences and cues and mixing them all together.

He has a show at the Brooklyn Museum, definitely worth going. A huge exhibition spanning his whole career. There's really nothing like seeing haute couture stuff in person. Throughout the exhibit you were hit with his big message: dress however you want, dress for yourself, don't worry about what other people think. It comes through in his clothes -- lots of gender-bending, overt sexuality to the point of parody, lots of irony.
