Re: Rak city

That is Boro, and it's beautiful. Pieces like that go for hundreds-thousands although you can pick up the fabric in japan and make one of those yourself. They're usually used as futon covers and stuff.

I wish hunnish's joke wasn't true, but I already have a hoard of boro...

Re: feeltalk thread

That sucks midvh - was it a good one? I used to have a wallet that was more expensive than the contents but now I just use a rubber band.

I'm going to make a zip wallet soon that I can put a chain on. I quite like biker chains and they can always be tucked away for different outfits.

Re: Hangout/podcast

I agree with starfox64, it should be about 'style' not just brands. Also, smiles is right -- without visual cues you're going to have to use information that most people already have reference to.

Re: Small wallet, big ideas - the DIY thread

Sounds good! Although you can buy patterns pretty cheaply which might be an easier place to start. I don't know if you're familiar with design processes, but designers usually make up a piece in calico to see if the fit is right before using anything expensive/too nice. I'd be really interested to s...

Re: Hangout/podcast

I think that sounds really good. I had no idea there was a previous attempt - anyone care to provide a link? What's most interesting about fashion these days isn't the runways, it's how designers and collections are playing out on forums. Those 'fashion memes' are a sign of the times, and I think th...

Re: Best of WAYWT

You're not 'boxy' you're BROAD, which is badass. If this was my outfit the only thing I'd change is I'd wear a vest under the shirt and leave it open. Then again, I almost never wear a closed shirt because I think unless it's huge it makes me look like sausagemeat.

Re: Small wallet, big ideas - the DIY thread

RycePooding, if you're going to sew fabrics together you should try and make sure they're a similar weight. Obviously this isn't big deal if you can't but it looks and hangs better. If you're sewing on a patch you should iron it on with webbing before sewing it. It'll make it neater all round. What ...

Re: ramdom fashion thoughts

Buying clothes and dressing is creative if you're putting thought into it, theres no doubt about that. The fact that you've bought and not made them doesn't create a distinction for me, because artists rarely make their own paint. Art is about intention, and if you've interpreted something it's a pi...

Re: ramdom fashion thoughts

I think I missed out on this discussion but as a comic book fan I can attest that it isn't only comics and graphic novels that you pay out the ass for, it's clothes, movies, toys, etc. I don't know why fashion enthusiasts are so hurt by unkind words, but the majority of people in our age group are i...

Re: what's love got to do got to do with it

I work (partly) in trend forecasting, and I've long worked in macro sociology and economics. While you're right that 'external forces' change taste, do you think it really matters? In an age where authenticity is constantly called into question is anyone really worried that someone is just jumping o...

Re: what's love got to do got to do with it

I don't think it's always a 'fetish' when you only like one look, it's just what you're attracted to. Fetish makes it sound sexual when I'm not sure it is entirely. The science of attraction is way too complicated for me to wax lyrical about, but I can understand that some people might like a 'type'...
