Re: homes, houses, and abodes

A question. If cities are very purposefully "designed" or engineered, even if it is meant to produce "vibrant and alive" neighborhoods, isn't that still taking away some degree of agency from those who will be living there? Kind of a "this is pretty and you will like it&quo...

Re: overdressed, undereducated: let's talk about school!

i've just seen the prediction of what my student loan will be and after i take away rent it's shocking. genuinely questioning my survival. i remember thinking the same but as long as you have a bit of cash saved up you'll be fine. only people i knew who had problems were those who relied solely on ...

Re: Films

Spring Breakers was just too bizarre for me to ever actually process it. I remember sitting there for the whole thing just thinking "this is all very strange".

of course though, that scene by the piano with the Britney Spears song is pure gold.

Re: feeltalk thread

i started to feel like an adult from the start of my second year at uni, mainly because i'm now buying my own food, paying rent, paying bills for the gas, electricity, internet etc. having said that, in a few years i'll inevitably look back at uni as being pretty juvenile, or perhaps as a nice trans...

Re: We don't run on this high street; we run this high stree

topman aw14 style editorial seems to be really pushing the elongated t-shirt. three elongated long-sleeve tees (straight hem with zip; curved hem; and a baseball-style b+w raglan sleeve thing) and a short sleeve elongated tee with a cut which, judging by the photo, is designed to be a topman attempt...

Re: ramdom jorts

regarding the posts above, i remember talking with people last year about all the preconceptions we had before going to uni. it does seem to be only the very top universities that seem to have any relation to the (now rather outdated perhaps) view of british uni life revolving around high culture an...

Re: feminism and social progressivism thread

i could be way off base here, but i would have thought that it's pretty difficult to give a condensed overview of something like feminism as it's too broad and multifaceted - more like a 'movement of movements' than one singular movement. i guess that in terms of common discursive themes there are t...

Re: Words, Words, Words

Opening lines to The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath: It was a clear, sultry summer, the summer they electrocuted the Rosenbergs, and I didn't know what I was doing in New York. I'm stupid about executions. The idea of being electrocuted makes me sick, and that's all there was to read about in the papers -...

Re: soccer/footy/futebol thread

They looked disorganised defensively throughout the tournament but yesterday they (a) came up against a much better opponent than in their previous fixtures, and (b) the glue that (just about) held ...

Re: What are you reading today/book club

Just finished reading The Psychopath Test this morning. http://static.oprah.com/images/201106/omag/201106-omag-books-test-284xFall.jpg Ronson is essentially a 'skeptic' of psychiatry (though skeptic is probably too strong a word really, he's more curious than critical) and the book is basically 'her...

Re: Stone island AW14

was eye-ing up the tortoise shell sweatshirt in Cruise the other day; print looks really nice and irl that reddish-brown "tobacco" colour is so tasty.

whole collection looks really cool from what little i've seen so far. tortoise shell print jackets will look amazing.

Re: soccer/footy/futebol thread

to me, consciously choosing a team to support is like sitting down with a list of world religions and going 'well that one looks cool, i'll believe in that from now on'

i'd say to just watch loads of matches and see if you start to feel an affinity towards a particular team.

went to the b&m Endclothing store today in Newcastle. I knew they had two separate stores (which are literally next door to each other) but didn't know why. Quickly discovered that one store was 90% nike air max and stussy gear, with everything else next door, which i thought was quite funny. st...

Re: Ask a question, get an answer

How do COS shirts/tees/polos fit compared to H&M, Gap, Uniqlo, LVC? And is there often much shrinkage in the wash (or does that depend more on the material of piece)? i've got a couple of cos tees and they seem to fit slightly smaller and slimmer than my uniqlo tees, albeit not by much. can't s...

Re: soccer/footy/futebol thread

Can't believe Messi got golden ball??? To be fair, I don't think he could believe it either - he looked pretty sheepish. He wasn't even Argentina's best player let alone the tournament's best player. I still hold a grudge against Messi for getting Asier Del Horno sent off in a Champions League game...
