let's talk about ad campaigns, because sknss and i have things to say! general ruminations re: how graphic design and photography convey brand image, ad campaigns from season to season, cool stuff, weird stuff, bad stuff, provocative stuff.

looking through swiss poster designs for a studio assignment, came across this fantastic riri ad published in 1971. really love how simple & slightly sensual it is + the kind of demographic/market it positions riri in is very clear. nice composition but not a huge fan of how the logo interacts with the photo.

Speaking of Jil, my favorite Jil Sander campaigns are those by Craig McDean with Guinivere van Seenus back in the 90s. Guinivere van Seenus for me is the perfect embodiment of the brand and she will always be the Jil Sander woman to me. I like how McDean's photos for Jil Sander had this aloof, cold detachment to them compared to their ads nowadays which are much more slick.

Wish they kept the middle placement of the logo for the current crop of ads though. The logo is very much like the clothes Jil Sander makes—rigidly minimalist yet strong with an austere quality. It's one of my favorite logos in fashion.

The color palette is so stereotypically spring (pastel! pale gold! soft greens!) but I like how it reminds me of Greek and Roman statues... must be all that drape. I love how the photo has this feeling of movement but everything still looks so calm and relaxed like freshly laundered sheets drying on the line.
