long fashion

Hello guys! A lot of times in my burgeoning fashion journey I've gotten super discouraged about my particular body type (6'6"+) and how I fit into the ~world of fashion~, sometimes to the point where I just sort of give up for a while. A lot of that is the need I've felt to conform to a certain style and wear certain clothes or types of clothes, and thankfully I've moved on from that a little bit I think. But it's still a bit of a challenge to find the clothes you want in the size you need, and to figure out what clothes you want in the first place! So I guess this thread is for tips about fit and silhouette, and dressing the long frame in general. But it can also be about brands, designers and shopping tips!

The idea behind this thread wasn't really to cordon off a body type for special treatment as much as it is to discuss long fashion, things that are long, and experiences of people with finding and wearing long things or long people wearing short things. My hope is that somehow the thread will serve to help out not only myself and other tall people, but everyone else as well. I certainly don't want to close this thread off to anyone. No matter your height if you have an idea that might help or an observation please please share it in this thread!

I'd like to mention a few brands very quickly and these are the obvious ones that you doubtless already know of.

First there is GAP, which everyone knows about and kind of has a meh reputation. Lads, it's the Gap. But they do have a lot of tall sizes and some nice long inseams. to their tall men's store, and to their tall women's, in case you don't have these in your chrome autofill. They seem to kind of stunting on the rest of the "high street" market at the moment, especially over fellow American brands. They have some really solid looking basic designs right now, a lot of workwear type stuff, which is great for my context (midwest usa). They did just hire a new head designer person, who they describe as "commercially-driven", so I dunno how that will change things.

There's also Levi's. I've only ever bought jeans from them, and I've had good luck. They have some nice long inseams as well, especially in their 501 shrink-to-fits, with seams up to 40 inches! I'll probably cop a pair of 40 inch long jeans in the fall just to feel what its like to have jeans that are too long :D.

I'm also interested in designers and brands like Margaret Howell, who I've seen some very long stuff from, and Steven Schneider. I have 0 experience with either so anyone who does please chime in!

I've discovered that oversized clothing and the philosophy of anti-fit is my savior. If you can't find clothes that fit you, embrace a philosophy that rejects the notion that clothes have to fit! I've really enjoyed getting into clothes that are designed to conform and drape around the body. I kinda fell in love with Jan Jan Van Essche and his work, Yohji Yamamoto and others, and I've started to worry less about things "fitting" or not, and more excited about clothes in general and ~how~ they fit. This is all pretty recent for me and I'm still very much a novice.

Also my recent purchase of c-t's hype item: the Story Time jacket, has been immensely satisfying. Very much jizzing with it. It's oversized and boxy and I just enjoy wearing it.

For me, trousers are the biggest issue. I have disproportionately long legs. I've had good luck recently in finding some long Yohji trousers on Rakuten and grailed. I get the feeling he didn't design with freaks like me in mind but nevertheless they successfully cover my legs and are very pretty to look at. And there's always the cropped look, which I have yet to experiment with.

I'm hoping and looking forward to any flintstone, advice, questions, opinions, dissertations on long clothes and the long fashion lyfe that you might have!

Rick's known for those super long arms and fairly long legs. My Detroits could probably reasonably fit someone 6-8" (note: I'm 5'9" or so) taller than me, given where it sits (low rise + 36" inseam). The arms are of his tops are also quite long and tend to go down to like... the knuckles of the hand (outerwear) or further, if I remember correctly, so for a more "traditional" fit it would probably work for someone with ~36" sleeve, give or take.

Devoa seems to be meant for pretty tall, athletic dudes too. Pants are anyone's guess since it's all curved and ~anatomical~ and such. I have a coat that before I hemmed up the sleeve a bit covered all but the tip of my pinky. I moved it to the knuckle, since I prefer it there, but again, could probably work for anyone up to a 36 or maybe 38" sleeve. Given the body of the coat going between my knee and mid-calf in terms of length, I'd say it's probably "meant" for someone between 6'0" and 6'2" since that'd be about exactly on the knee.

I'd be wary of some of the Rick bottoms if you're tall. Pods and some of the short like things he puts out look real shitty if they hit you at our knee or above. Though he made some shorty shorts that hit mid thigh last spring that looked p cool with a jacket.

I'm by no means "tall," but at 6'2" I feel some of your pain. I've had a lot of luck with Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto. Really most of the Japanese avant garde designers that cater to the "clothes that don't fit" type market are cool. Since if pants are too short or too long, who cares? If you're broad too, Comme des Garcon might be harder to find pieces for.

That model isn't 6"4 I've met him

I'm only 6"2 so I don't really have trouble finding clothes that fit unless it's long coats, actual, below the knee long coats are quite hard to find. You should embrace your look and wear clothes that make you look tall, you'll become an extremely impressive behemoth
