that's such a weird article
edit: to appease mr bela
he goes back and forth from "shells are bad and there's no such thing as breathable" and "umbrellas are vastly superior as long as you don't mind the fact that you have to carry them" to "wait the quote unquote breathable shell did perform better in my weird test" and then back to "don't wear shells very much because they're not the most important part of layering" but wait "then again they've gotten pretty good nowadays and they're actually pretty practical"
I just don't get what he's really trying to say
like yeah, wearing a shell when its not going to rain is most often pointless
wearing your shell when its warm out and not unzipping it and opening the pit vents and such is also dumb
not wearing a proper baselayer that wicks moisture when climbing/skiing/etc is a bad idea
not bringing a shell when its raining hard will cause you to get very wet and very cold very fast
could just sum it all up as "layer properly and accept the fact that while doing outdoor activity you will get sweaty and maybe a little bit wet but you'll be ok if you've got proper clothing on"
