hello2all I would like to introduce you to my two 'brands' that I run/design

Image

Moloch Clothing is the first one, I started it in my 3rd year of university and it launched March 2013. I'd been designing stuff and doing illustrations in Photoshop since I was 14 and I guess I thought it would be cool to put some prints on tees, it started off more as a business plan than a really strong design idea. The first and second collections did ok, but weren't the commercial success I'd been hoping for, through that 'failure' I realised that actually I wasn't that interested in doing something super commerical anyway, and would rather just make something that I thought was cool, as at least I could still take pride in what I had made, even if no one bought it. This is pretty much what started my more serious interest in fashion and eventually encouraged me to start the other brand, which I'll talk about later. So here's a preview of the new collection, I hope you guys dig it!

You can find the rest at: and you can read about the flintstone behind the collection on the blog: http://molochclothing.tumblr.com/

Just some info about the products I print onto:

-The men's tees are all Uniqlo tees (the 'packed' tees that come in the plastic wrappers), I have tested and researched like one bazillion tees and these ones are just great, the fit is nice, washing them doesn't cause shrinkage or affect the softness and if you cold wash them inside out the print doesn't fade at all, so they're pretty much perfect

-The sweatshirts are done by a brand called All We Do is Sweatshirts (all they do is sweatshirts) and they're unisex. I like them because they have a loose waistband that doesn't ride up but they're still a bit fitted and best of all they're super comfy and have a really soft inside, they also print perfectly

-The women's tees are 70% bamboo cotton and 30% normal cotton, this fabric feels super soft, I haven't had a chance to test them out thoroughly because I am not a woman but they print nice and seem really good and come from a good t-shirt brand (Continental)

-The tote bags are made and printed in england, they're my own product developed from scratch with a pattern cutter, and manufactured by a super skilled factory. The canvas prints amazingly well and is mega tough, it's the same material that Paul Smith use for their printed canvas bags. they have a small pocket on the inside and they're a nice big size to carry shit

The other brand which I co-run is called Travail en Famille, and is also centred on prints. As I became more and more interested in fashion through doing research for Moloch and became exposed to high fashion through modelling I began to come up with more ambitious ideas than just printed tees. My mum, who used to be a buyer at Liberty in London, would really encourage me and was constantly saying that I should expand. One day we had this long conversation about making some products inspired by these old cigarette cards my Grandpa had collected, AND SO THE SEED WAS SEWN WHICH WOULD BLOSSOM INTO TRAVAIL EN FAMILLE: FERNWEH

Fernweh is the german word for wanderlust and the name of our first collection, every fabric design is inspired by a traveler or great journey. The collection is going to consist of bags and scarves, we are ordering the scarf fabric this week and will hopefully launch the scarves very soon, the bags will be a little longer. In the meantime let me tell you about a couple of our products so you get a feel for what we're about

This is the Gertrude Bell duffel bag

First of all I just want to say that this was our first sample back from our factory after months of pattern cutting, finding the right fabrics and design work and blah blah, it is not a finished product and there are many details that still need to be worked on, but pls let me know what you think anything you like/don't like!

First of all here's a short biography we wrote of Gertrude Bell:

The design has a map of the geographical area in which she completed one of her greatest journeys and spent most of her time, the flowers are hollyhocks which are symbolic of ambition in the language of flowers, this seemed very appropriate for Gertrude. On the finished bag a dotted line will be embroidered onto the fabric showing the route she took

And this is the Amelia Earhart silk chiffon scarf

This is pretty close to a final sample really, although we are going to tweak the design to make the face smaller/remove it as it often gets warped and looks ghoulish lol. Our bio about Amelia:

The map on this scarf is a 1950s flight routes map and the flowers are tuberose flowers which mean 'dangerous pleasures' in the language of flowers.

We print our fabric and manufacture everything in England (apart from our cotton velvet which is printed in scotland), we do this so that we can work super closely with our manufacturers on the product development and also to ensure the absolute highest quality materials and construction.

We have a whole load of other fabric designs for scarves and bags, as well as 2 other bag silhouettes and various different scarf sizes/fabrics which I will tell you more about soon. Not every design is a combination of flowers and maps but we do take strong flintstone from the language of flowers and because the collection is inspired by travel we also use a lot of maps. Because what we read and discovered about these great travelers was such a huge flintstone and motivation for the collection we really want to communicate that through the product, the bags have a short printed bio on the inside sewn onto the lining and the scarfs will come packaged with a nice bit of information about the flintstone. The website is also going to place a strong focus on telling the stories of these incredible people, but you'll see all that in due time

Just to clear things up about Moloch I only came across brands like Cav Empt after I had finished the collection, this collection was actually severely delayed for a few reasons and I'm just going to drip feed in new stuff in the future. I actually came across a Cav Empt white piece with the missing image icon on it a few weeks ago and I was pretty disappointed that someone had already done it (although I guess it's fairly obvious). I originally made that design to use as an avatar on an internet forum in 2011. The whole retro computer thing has been a design trend for a bit now I guess but if you look at the flintstone and ideas behind the collection (PETSCII, viruses, usenet archive) I think/hope you will find a lot of genuine and original stuff, even though there is definitely an aesthetic crossover point with other brands.

Some information about our silk squares YO:

Crepe de chine is a classic silk fabric traditionally worn by the Victorians during mourning. We looked to 20th century pilots for our styling flintstone for the scarves. Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, the flintstone behind one of our scarf prints and she always wore a silk scarf.

Image

Image

Silk scarves for men were popularised by pilots in both world wars, the scarves would keep them warm and protect their neck from chafing as they scanned the skies for enemy planes.

Image

We are doing two classic styles for the crepe de chine scarves: a 100cm x100cm silk square and a very wearable 22cm x 190cm rectilinear scarf. Most fabric printers in the UK will offer printing onto some sort of crepe de chine so this gave us a really nice amount of choice. In the end we opted for a specialist silk printer based in Worcestershire. The crepe we are using can be defined by it’s wonderful smooth texture and luxurious weight. The level of detail that can be achieved printing onto it is also truly incredible. During our sampling process we looked at a lot of different fabrics and printed onto several different weights of crepe to test what looks best, it was an arduous process but we’re over the moon with the results:

And now some info about our silk chiffon scarves!

Silk Chiffon is the second type of silk we'll be printing on for the upcoming Fernweh collection, and oh what a lovely fabric it is. Chiffon is a sheer and slightly see-through fabric, as a result it’s impossible to tell which side of the fabric was printed because the ink runs through to the other side perfectly! We selected a chiffon that is incredibly light and delicate to the touch, I showed one to a friend but she was scared to handle it because she thought she might rip it! Despite it’s delicate feel it’s actually very tough. As part of our product testing we put the scarves through quite a lot of wear and tear to make sure they're not too flimsy.

Something that we are really keen to push with this collection is silk scarves for men. The silk square is a womens’ wardrobe classic and needs no introduction for most ladies. However the wearing of silk by men seems to be limited to the immaculately styled dandy, not a look which all men aspire to. For too long the EFFORTLESS PANACHE and RECKLESS COURAGE that accompanies a silk scarf has been denied to 21st century men.

In order to make the silk chiffon scarves more wearable for men we started by increasing the size of the scarves to 120cm x 120cm, a generous portion of silk indeed. These extra centimetres make the scarves extremely wearable, the increased length looks great on mens’ bodies and feels less dandyish than smaller silk squares. The see-through nature of silk chiffon softens the prints and makes them easy to combine with almost any jacket or coat. Of course the scarves still look great on women too.

The modern working man doesn’t have time to faff about tying a knot in his scarf or carefully folding a neat pocket square, that’s why we recommend simply folding the scarf in half into a triangle and chucking it on under a coat or jacket, like so:

Ready to infiltrate the Russian embassy and drink a lot of Gin and tonic.

it's hard to put it into a list of pros and cons but here are the major differences between our crepe and chiffon scarves:
-The two fabrics print differently and we choose which prints to use on which accordingly, the crepe has strong, crisp colours whilst the chiffon is softer and a little washed out, both print details extremely well
-Our chiffon scarves are 120cm squared whilst the crepe are 1m squared, it doesn't sound like that much but it is actually a really big difference, because the colours on the chiffon are more subtle you can wear a really large scarf and it doesn't feel like 'too much'
-Chiffon is quite see through and extremely light, whilst the crepe is more like what you would traditionally think of silk as being
-Chiffon is really nice for summer and won't keep you warm really, the crepe won't keep you that warm either but it offers a little protection
-Print on the chiffon goes all the way through on both sides perfectly whilst one side of the crepe is more washed out, we tried to pick a weight of crepe that felt nice whilst still having the print coming through strong on the other side

So that's it really!

just love the prints—great eye for the proper size/scale to create an abstract feel while still retaining the character and nature of the themes. also love the oversized nature and the wholehearted support of florals and silks for men. really excited to see these in the shop!

I am super happy to say that website has now launched with a small range of products available to pre order, with all pre orders being sent out on the 12th November, as a reward for pre ordering we'll cover the shipping costs! Over the next month or so we are going to be rolling out LOADS more products which I'll obviously keep you all up to date with, for now have a look at what we've got up and if you browse around the site there's all sorts of info about us, the collection and why we're doing this!

:woop:

Also should probably say that everything is EXTREMELY limited, don't think we have more than 6 of any one product.

I agree that postage is annoying but the only way we could 'eat' the postage so to speak would be to add it on to the current price, which wouldn't really make any difference although I suppose it would make the whole process a bit cleaner. We're already taking massive cuts out of our potential markup in order to manufacture in Britain and still sell things at we think is a fair price!

5 new silk scarves up on the website, next week we'll be introducing the wool scarves and some longer thinner rectilinear silk scarves. We're shooting our lookbook this Monday and are frantically working on a couple of items for it that I think (hope) the c-t crew will really dig. Pre-orders are over but if you buy something today you will still be able to get free shipping. Here's some pics of the new scarves, including the Violet, which is my personal fav silk square:
