Wristwatch materials, whats your favourite?

Postby StephenPhillips » Tue Jul 03, 2018 11:27 am

Hello Everyone,

I'm very new and joined mostly to find out about everyone's favourite material for watches and watch straps.

I'm looking at writing an article for my blog which relates closely to watches and the materials used when producing them. Whilst many either have leather or 316L stainless steel there has been a lot of new manufacturing techniques which now allow a huge range of different style prints and materials to be used.

I've seen a Maurice Lacroix watch which has a denim strap, a Rotary watch which has an alligator skin strap and even a Citizen Royal Marines watch with a strap made from Kevlar (the bullet proof material) Just in case I guess.

I wanted to know / find out what your favourite type of watch material is and why please (smiling)

Love the F-91W (smiling) is it the black rubber one?

I have the gold metal bracelet version, its got a nice matte finish so its not so 'in your face' as the polished gold flashy flashy one.

Thanks for the reply.

i'd like a watch that had a case and strap made from sapphire glass and a face made of stainless steel so it was kind of inverted. Ideally you wouldn't be able to see through the stainless steel so you couldn't tell the time.

i've owned lots of watches- some really beautiful- but they always ended up in a drawer. and then i'd get worried about having things of such value lying around while i went away so i ended up selling them. i don't think what i want exists, i don't even know what it is.

i own two wristwatches. a plain khaki nato strap on my seiko and i've got a straight up steel casio. either are fine; i think i prefer nato straps by default.
i'd be down for a leather strap sooner or later, but that inherently feels very grown up and beyond that has a very "formal" air to me, so it's not really where i'm at right now.

I own two casio a168's and I mostly like them because they're cheap. I don't like fabric straps because they get gross with sweat and feel uncomfortable when wet.

on this topic, does anyone else dislike how big wristwatches have become. 42mm seems about standard now for a sports model/diver and it just feels a bit obnoxious to me.

when I was once drunk I bought a £1 plastic watch on ebay, when it arrived the straps were so stiff I could barely tie it round my wrist

I have a Fossil watch. Its bracelet is made of leather and it serves me for three years. Very convenient and stylish.

I always go for stainless steel straps and a sapphire/crystal glass. That way, I don't need to be extra carefull about scratching it or getting it wet in the rain...
