i think the idea that most science fictions are allegories for the already-happened or currently-happening is a fairly old idea not unique to Bielskyte? i don't think it's so much that we default to imagined futures, but that our imaginary futures were always real, and intimately connected with whatever milieu prompted their conception. for example, you might try to think about how gibson's novels, with their futuristic, dystopian settings, tackle many of the exact same themes and issues as contemporaneous postmodern novels that do not take place in futuristic settings or settings that could be properly described as "dystopic". the idea that we simply need to start thinking up better futures and that this will enable those futures to manifest seems to me to be both incredibly naive and borderline impossible, and also ignores that "future" itself is a fairly loaded ideological concept (lee edelman's "no future" comes to mind here). or even to go back to hauntology: is the future even, like, real MAN?!?!?!?

Also yeah the point about 'imagining a better future' isn't so much that imagining makes it so, more that without imagining it almost definitely won't happen. You can't start agitating for the global socialist revolution unless you've got the idea of the global socialist revolution. I'm sure this concept has been explored by some euro philosopher. I'm going to guess... Hegel. It seems Hegelian to me, and I've never read even Hegel's wikipedia page.

Haven't seen GITS since I were a lad but I rewatched the ending 'battle' again recently and was struck by how downbeat, sad, slow, Pyrrhic and lonely it is:

ok, a few quick things and ill shut up about this:

a) the hegelian dialectic doesnt work
b) capitalism continues to intensify even though we have already exhaustively described things like the communist state, etc.
c) our "imagined futures" are always inclusive of the present and past (e.g. "fully automated luxury space communism" draws upon historical materialism and techno utopianism, both being very old ideas). so i guess what i'm trying to say is: good luck imagining a "future" that isn't completely entrenched in your current ideological sphere

maybe we shouldnt be looking towards the future but trying our best to inhabit the present

i find "imagined futures" (the good sort) to never really be that radical, and to always incorporate certain base assumptions: humans must be in this future (or: the future is for humans), this future will tend towards some form of economic collectivism (socialism, communism, etc.), it will be a more technologically advanced future regardless of how this technology is distributed, etc

rarely do we imagine the future where humans willingly exterminate themselves so that the other billions of species can live on, or futures that completely reimagine categories like the economic or the technological as necessary, important.

other thing to consider: the future as a political byproduct of heteronormativity

I think the Lee Edelman essay is interesting and it has influenced me but I think it's itself politically suspect. Partly as a result of reading it, I also tend to de-emphasize the future in my politics because I think it's totally defined by capitalist ideology. I like to scandalize my friends by getting drunk and hollering about how the future does not exist and only sells you products. But while he has some interesting stuff in there, Edelman I think is ultimately heavily susceptible to the sort of bankrupt "end of history" neoliberalism in his political outlook.

I do think that the way we think of time in our society (not saying it's ideal) necessitates thinking ahead to some degree. I would hesitate to say we need an imagined future, but we do need a plan.

I did write a bunch on this subject in regards to the Blade Runner sequel in the cyberpunk thread a while back.

we've just gone from looking at Gross Flex Product to Gross Flex Product Return

examples:
Acronym may have high Gross Flex Product to a certain demographic, but poor Gross Flex Product Return. The InterOps ability to quickly draw your macbook to write some python code for your ~world changing~ catfood sharing app has great pull with the techbro/acronym group, but requires the purchase of two expensive units.

Engineered Garments has high Gross Flex Product, but finding vintage heritage garments in a thrift/consignment store has exponentially better Gross Flex Product Return, as you get almost the same product for significantly less.

Kiko Kostadinov has high Gross Flex Product, but wearing Dickies has much better Gross Flex Product Return as you get practical workwear at a fraction of the cost. Compare the cost of triple dart pants to 874s + tailoring/modifications.

army gear is absolutely my thing.. MA1, A-2, OG 507 pants and shirt, GATs, watch caps, NATO straps, etc..

I love it, the simple looks paired with the high quality + comfort for generally pretty cheap is a great aesthetic i see myself working in. I'm careful not to make it feel like a costume but its usually pretty simple so even wearing multiple army gear at once doesnt look too odd unless its all the same shade (no camo)

Also it feels really good to workout in, like duh theyre made to withstand physical activity

I went to DSMLA today and it was neat. Here are a few take aways.

- Kiko's stuff looks/feels very cool in person, lives up to the internet hype imo, but I'm not in that tax bracket so like it will be nice to just be able to go look at it. They didn't have any of the Affix stuff left when I went, and I assume it was probably some of the first to sell out on Saturday. They had a small rack of Telfar which was nice to see, I hope that does well here. (smiling) Menswear from The Row was very cool to look at in person, but I honestly don't see it doing as well in LA as I'm sure it will in New York. The Noah space was my favorite (obvi), and now I want to buy one of those corduroy suits but like when would I wear that??

- I cant speak to other DSM locations but LA feels very much like a space that is meant to be photographed/for people to be photographed in. There were like 60 million people there today because it's opening weekend so this wasn't as common as I'm sure it will be in the next couple of weeks as things start to slow down, but there were already a LOT of people snapping pictures of displays/waiting their turn to pose with the sculptures and displays that break up the space. All of the designer specific spaces are set up almost like a TV set with two walls and some kind of backdrop/central fixture. (lol I guess I stopped in the middle of writing this sentence the first time.) It feels very LA and I definitely understand the appeal of that kind of merchandising, but I think I prefer places like Opening Ceremony that are equally interesting to walk around/shop in, and you don't feel like you're ruining someone's photo while you're trying to shop (plus I honestly like their buys more).

- They gave away chains that say "DOVER STREET MARKET LOS ANGELES" as a gift w/ purchase. People are probably selling them on Grailed for like $200 lmao. I bought one of the Noah exclusive t-shirts and this cute hat from Denim Tears.
