To offer a converse, I'm half Jewish American (Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth to Ellis Island ~1830), but I like to identify as Danish-American, because being Danish is rare and cool, I'm like a unicorn!

I get you heck, but if you don't feel like you're from wherever because you were born and raised somewhere else then I think you should be allowed.

I put down my ethnicity as "Indian" on forms but if someone asked where I'm from I always say Birmingham. Would feel super weird of me to say India, and pretty weird to say South Africa. I generally don't want to get into some long conversation about "where I'm really from" because I don't really know how to answer that and why is it so important anyway? If someone wants to know where my family is from that's fine, but I don't see why I should be defined by that.
