Wow, so I didn't know that Dana Lee stuff was in Crystal Fairy, I watched Crystal Fairy like RIGHT before I started getting into fashion so it's kind of weird watching it again drooling over the clothes as opposed to the first time I watched it that I didn't even notice it.

Weird perspective change, didn't even think they dressed that well the first time I watched it, I just thought the clothes made the movie have a definite jizz.

Saw Edge of Tomorrow ft. Emily Blunt last night. I was surprised to see that it had such a high RT score, and I didn't have high expectations going into it, but it was great! Not a particularly novel concept, and the backstory wasn't really explained with much depth, but it was clearly a movie that wasn't meant to be taken too seriously. Lots of light moments made for a fun time.

going to make a recommendation for "The Dirties". It's about these two kids who are making a movie about them shooting their bullies. It's possibly one of the most interesting and realistic character studies I've seen, it's a very good film. Probably one of my favorites of all time.

Summer vacation to me means staying up until 4AM every fucking night watching movies. Something about summer is captured so perfectly in cinema: the relaxed idleness, the detachment from real life. I've been watching/rewatching Eric Rohmer and Hou Hsiao Hsien recently and they are really good at capturing this spirit.

Rohmer doesn't make grandiose opuses with aspirations of 'high art,' which I think is a universal feature of summer films. I don't know if I'd want to watch 2001 or The Mirror or 8 1/2, for example. Instead he places his films within the context of everyday life.

been so lazy with films recently, went to see Godzilla in the cinema with my mum, it was actually pretty watchable, I don't know why the character design for the weird bug aliens that fought with godzilla was so different to godzilla, they looked pretty bad

Watched Primer the other day



To start off, this might not be for everyone due to the small budget (like $7000 I believe) and the extremely confusing plot. It's a time travel flick(very original) but offers a really unique view of the whole thing. I've seen it once and hit the wiki after so now I'm at the point where i think I loosely understand it. Having a linear knowledge of physics among other things (the space-time continuum lol) would probably be a plus when watching it. My friend thought they didn't explain the intricate story-line clearly enough but I think that's where the movie caught my interest. I lot of the things I enjoy media wise are intricate, like Dune(which I recently started) for example. Might post in the book thread about that later. Anyway it's a really short flick which runs about an 1 hour iirc. If you can spare an hour of your time, give it a watch, I'd love to talk about it.

this morning and this afternoon i re-visited a couple of films i hadn't seen for a year or so.

first, 'Following'. It's the first feature length by Christopher Nolan (Insomnia, Memento, The Prestige, Inception, Batman etc) and was filmed whilst he was at university so it's very low budget, and all the actors are just university students, and I think I'm right in saying that none of them were actually studying acting. Despite the lack of actors, money, time constraints, sets etc it's a classic Nolan film with non-linear chronology and a tonne of twists and turns. Only 70 minutes so well worth a watch if you have a spare hour.



The second is 'Enter The Void'. Just like the first time round it left me somewhat speechless. The epitome of Gaspar Noe in the sense that it sits on the boundary of sophisticated art and unadulterated exploitation. As an overall film it's good without being great, but visually it is just absolutely incredible. Probably a 7.5/10 in my opinion, but purely because of its aesthetics its a film that everybody should see. The trailer (below) is fantastic.

I agree that Mirror and 2001 aren't really summer movies, but Fellini is my go to summer director. To me, summer movies are ones that you could put on any day and feel nice and fuzzy inside at the end. Every time you watch one again it feels like you're hanging out with an old friend. Amarcord, for instance, always leaves me with such a warm and cozy feeling and it really captures that detachment from reality that you mentioned. Even 8 1/2 gives me the feeling that summer movies do, but it might only be because of the last sequence and I have a soft spot for Fellini that makes me really happy after watching all of his movies (except for La Strada). Everyone has different movies that make them feel different ways, though. Like you said, it's hard to really describe a summer film.

Just watched the documentary Good Hair and I highly recommend it. It's well done and slightly humorous and I think probing without being harshly judgmental.

I haven't seen the first two tales yet, but My Night at Maud's or Claire's Knee are probably the ones I come back to the most. Good point on Fellini, it helps that a lot of his films end at the beach.

Hou's best films might be his 90's work, but I think A Time to Live, A Time to Die is a good starting point, and you'll see his growth as a filmmaker.

Saw Wheatley's Sightseers late last night at a free outdoor screening in the city. Wonderfully dark, depraved and hilarious. The film follows two new lovers on a caravanning holiday around northern England, only the bloke is secretly a bit of a serial killer.

Acting in it is superb as are the sumptuous shots of rural northern England (reminding me of The Trip). Film drags a little towards the end but the last scene is so hilariously perfect that it's well worth it. Highly recommended for anyone a fan of dark British macabre comedies.

amaz lead performances, great vistas and transitions, great thriller direction, I recommend. its a tightly wound, exciting and unsettling ride. robert pattison's performance was beautiful and very compelling.

saw I, Robot and for some reason thought it would be kind of serious and thought-provoking but like damn, will smith's character's incessant need to drop a shitty one-liner every fifteen minutes really took me out of the moment

he actually did a fake sneeze and "sorry, I'm allergic to bullshit" thing. who even does that? was that considered funny in 2004? how was 2004 ten years ago?

aside from that it was decent, 7/10 will probably watch again at some point maybe

watched World War Z for the second time as it came on Netflix. Right after I finished, the unrated version was uploaded. Would like to check that out in the future.

Anyway I liked it. Exciting, and the pacing was pretty good. But my main gripe is that everything always seemed to work out for Pitt's character. I mean



There's tons of examples. Besides that point, I thought the ending was really well done for a zombie movie.

Alright , gave Upstream Color a try. Here we go:



This is a really hard film to describe, so I won't. This post is probably only going to make sense if you've seen the movie.

With that in mind Upstream Color is a cinematic feat hard to compare to anything else (except maybe Primer, for obvious reasons). If you don't like when movie's resist telling you explicitly what is happening, this movie isn't for you. I liked this better than Primer since I think it fixed a lot of primer's problems. I'm mostly referring to budget but I feel like Upstream Color is way more fleshed out than Primer, which helps with comprehension and overall enjoyment. My main problem was that even though I understood the emotions the film was trying to portray, it ended up being too monotonous. But as far as movie's making you feel a certain way, Upstream Color definitely accomplished that.

I'm not nearly smart enough to pick up on all the things outlined in this movie but i think it's worth a watch regardless.

Tired of WWII movies yet?

watched edge of tomorrow this past weekend. highly recommend it, i'm seriously. highly. it is a fantastic sci fi/action movie. super entertaining, funny at times, great action, tom cruise and emily blunt are good. i would even consider buying it on DVD when it comes out, it's that good.

last night i watched a normal heart, the hbo movie based on the play about the spread of hiv/aids in the gay community in the 80's. back when kaposi's sarcoma was called "gay cancer" and people still didn't know what the fuck was happening or how it was transmitted and it was called "grid." i wouldn't say the movie is stellar; the acting is all solid but the directing is really jumpy and over dramatic (apparently directed by the guy who does american horror story, nip/tuck, glee, etc--i really feel like they should've gotten a more... tempered director)). the pacing also drags on and the story seems a bit repetitive. but i cried like 10 times. it is just heartbreaking to watch all these formerly healthy, active, happy, virile men just wasting away due to sickness, and even more heartbreaking to see people's aversion to helping or coming near to them. matt bomer was amazing in it, i'm glad that he got a role like that because i feel like people underestimate him due to his freakishly beautiful appearance

this was too much fun and i strongly recommend it. i found it smart, creative and gripping. the two korean actors from The Host have really amazing performances, and chris evans doesnt jump off the screen but it's nice he can do better roles than captain america. tilda swinton is obviously brilliant.



The Obvious Child
she is hilarious and this is a great and honest look at abortion culture. this movie is refreshingly female forward for a mainstream release. strong recommend



I am excited for the new woody allen. colin firth and emma stone look so goddamn charming.

cameron- do you know which version of Snowpiercer you saw? I am curious which version ended up being released in the US as last year there was a big debate between the director and the weinstein company who wanted to cut out some 30 minutes, they were basically implying it was too smart for the general North American audience. It would have been dreadful if it went through like that, but I'm curious where the US release stands now. I also found that movie quite entertaining.

Not necessarily a new movie but I saw Ruby Sparks for the 2nd time recently and although I liked it the first time I found it absolutely amazing the second time, I don't want to give it away for anyone who hasn't seen it already but every detail of that movie is well crafted and it had me wondering why Paul Dano doesn't get more leading roles.

Watched children of men for the first time yesterday, really impressive movie and it had Michael Caine as a hippy which was a big bonus. Highlight for me though was Syd the fascists pigs dope fit in the baby scene
