Guardians of the Galaxy was really really good. Perfect mix of action and humor. It doesn't go super in depth on anything but it doesn't need to. Fun movie. I'd recommend it.

i really, really liked Moonrise Kingdom. i love movies about running away and living unconventionally (Pierrot le Fou, Midnight in Paris, In Bruges) and this was pretty much the apex of that sort of film to me. the surroundings are gorgeous, the characters are grounded but interesting and likable - Edward Norton as a dedicated boyscout leader is just the best.

and lest we forget the beautifully recreated mid 60's stylings, on level with Mad Men.

Saw Boyhood over the weekend. I enjoyed it very much. It's one of those movies that you watch and can relate to almost every scene - whether it's with the main character, his sister, family, or the people he encounters throughout his life. Amazing that it was shot in a 12 year time span.

Highly recommend watching Enemy. Very tense and taut. It's by the director who did Prisoners and Incendies. Bonus for Canadians- it's set in fake canada+Mississauga!

Wow, the Guardians of the Galaxy movie is terrible. So awful. It's not even one of those fun yet ultimately hollow movies, it's just completely lacking in substance. Zero character development and very little world building. Relied too much on comic relief to sell a trite and boring story. Zoe Saldana's "acting" made me so angry I stopped engaging with the movie halfway through. Gamora is by far the most maddening of them all. You mean to tell me a trained and renowned assassin was defeated in combat by characters less powerful than her, allowed herself to be carted off to prison with nary a peep and cannot even finish a simple mission without the aid of less capable characters? She's so unbelievable in the most basic sense of the word. Probably the only nice things I can say about this movie is that the character designs for the villains are appealing, but even then they're boring villains. I mean, I know this is a Marvel movie, but come onnnnnn. Not even the sight of Chris Pratt's abs can save it.

I actually feel really similarly to you in regard to the lack of substance, but I still liked the movie. It was not as good as people were raving it to be, but it certainly wasn't bad. Perhaps the hype just led to disappointment?

I wasnt expecting anything at all, actually. All I knew about the movie was from the trailer and when I asked around before seeing it, people said the movie was just okay. I was genuinely surprised at how much I disliked this movie.

Saw Korine's Spring Breakers last night. Had been on the fence about seeing it for ages but I'm ever so glad I did - absolutely blew me away and can't stop thinking about it both as an experience (the film plays more like a super long and trippy music video than a conventional story) and as a thoroughly unconventional yet strong tale in its own right.

Was especially mesmerised by the use of colour and light in every shot - simply some astonishing choices. There's a scene early on where the girls are in a lecture hall with the lights off, but the students are bathed in coloured light from the slideshows on their laptops. With every new slide the ambient colour of the room changes like some surreal chillout room at a club. Towards the end there's a whole (climactic) scene shot almost entirely with neon pastel pink and neon mustard against darkness - simply incredibly well chosen.

It's a film that I can imagine most people absolutely loathing for any number of reasons (biggest among them is simply failing to connect to what the film is doing/saying) but it's absolutely up my street. Reminded me greatly of Refn's Only God Forgives in tone and style but with a much stronger narrative. Also quite comparable to a Malick film with its surrealism, non-linear cuts and disconnected voice overs.

Spring Breakers was just too bizarre for me to ever actually process it. I remember sitting there for the whole thing just thinking "this is all very strange".

of course though, that scene by the piano with the Britney Spears song is pure gold.

just watched Three Colours: Blue by Krzysztof Kieślowski.
it feels a bit cheap to put the mystery of this film into words. the images, cinematography and editing propel the film in a kind of wordless way. its so urgent yet doesn't have much of plot; the film rushes forward even as juliet binoche's character just wants to escape it and be alone. binoche's face is so fucking absorbing/ compelling, sometimes it doesn't really matter what she is saying. at one point she is sitting in a park in paris, feeling the sunshine on her face, the score swells, an hunched old lady walks slowly past and i felt feelings like never before.

Just finished In Bruges and thoroughly loved it; manages to be both a dark comedy and a powerful drama simultaneously, and the film is flawlessly cast. Was both chucking and aghast throughout

I just watched Gummo by Harmony Korine. I thought it was fairly good. Some parts felt a bit contrived, however i think if i had a better grasp on koraine's work it probably wouldn't feel that way as much. It was really an interesting snapshot of a surreal white trash nightmare. So i looked up what other people had to say about it and i just don't understand why movie critics who are interested in a classic hollywood movie that derives all it's artistic value from a strong narrative would even go see the movie. I just don't get why you would waste article space and your time to talk about how you hate a movie that's obviously not intended for you to watch. And it's really hilarious to me to hear all these people talk about this unrealistic portrayal of disturbing content. Guess what people do a lot worse things for money than kill cats. I found some of the content gruesome, but disturbing? Not at all. I also found it amazingly ignorant for coming so down on the movie for portraying the characters as low life or unintelligent. It wasn't like it was a movie against people who take pleasure in lower class things, yet these critics were complaining about having to watch a film filled with low life poor stupid people. How can this borderline bigotry even get published?

i think the key to appreciating french new wave is wine. i was watching pierrot le fou while i was pretty wasted and everything just flowed together instead of me getting caught up in why this "makes no sense".
