it came from a 'word reference forum' (no idea how i found myself there...) where they were arguing whether it was acceptable to reply with one if someone greeted you with the other... they also argued over whether you were allowed to use the word "too" if you used "merry" after they had used "happy" (or vice versa) because since merry and happy are different, the "too" doesn't apply

i hadn't thought about it being in relation to a second language and i don't remember them talking about it like that... but it could have been

yeah, WordReference is a (mostly really helpful) forum/collaborative dictionary (I'll have like 8 tabs of it up when reading something in Spanish). (I found —the OP has a little note in their post that says their first language is Korean.) it's especially good bc it has a lot of content related to collocations, which is something most standard dictionaries don't touch on. the merry/happy thing is a collocation—there's no syntactic or semantic rule that could predict which would go with which holiday, it's just something that English speakers intuit due to use and exposure. (most prepositions are collocational in most languages too—e.g. why do we (er, American English speakers at least—I can't speak to Scottish intuitions) say "ride on a bus" and "ride on a motorcycle" but "ride in a car"?)

Sony scrapped the movie about killing Kim Jung Un

I feel like they should have anticipated something like this happening. Poor decisions all around. It seemed in poor taste anyways, people definitely wouldn't be okay with a comedy about Hitler or Pol Pot, but for some reason it's okay to make a comedy about Kim Jung Un. It's not like there isn't mass starvation, forced labor camps and various other gross human rights violations that are and have been occurring in NK.

Some jorts from traveling:

- The toilet seat in my parents' house is much lower than the one where I live, so whenever I sit down, there's a terrifying moment where I fear that I've fallen into the toilet somehow.

- For all you math/physics/CS nerds, (about quantum computational complexity, but mostly about whatever else he wants to talk about) is really good. I read about half of it on the flight (skipping some of the proofs), and my brain felt tired afterward.
