I need to find things to do in New York. Let's talk about meet-ups, restaurants, stores, things to do, etc.

Going to NYC next year for school. Main worry is how complicated the subway system is compared to the one in DC.

headed to new york for july 4 again this year. taking public trans from JFK to financial district (which is apparently not called 'fidi' in new york). pretty terrified as i'm horrible with directions and i get very nervous/anxious driving or traveling in unknown areas. i used GPS nav on my phone to and from work for months before i felt comfortable without it, and that is only a 15 min drive.

I didnt know jack about the lines and wasn't about to memorize the routes for a week trip; google maps on my phone did it all. The public transit route feature is useless on west coast but so crucial to have in nyc. Just bring your charger with you everywhere because the battery drains like 4x faster because of all the surrounding buildings.

*tip: map your route then screenshot the directions in case you need them when riding underground, in case you get disconnected or something.

google maps is 95% reliable and will tell you how to get anywhere. it even has a compass, you'd have to be super clueless to have too much trouble getting around

I haven't really used Google Maps on my phone since Apple nixed it, but I rely on whenever I'm in the city and have always gotten around just fine

hello friends

i have tagged everyone i am aware of that can possibly make it to the june 13th/14th meetup. if i missed anyone feel free to chime in.

does anyone have anything in particular they'd like to do? obv there's tons of things to do, restaurants/places to hang out in, things to see etc etc. it can be free-form or somewhat structured, it's all up to you guys.

personally i'd like to hang around soho/tribeca for all the stores and cool stuff that's around there, but we have all day to roam around.

there's also the option of using airbnb to rent out a place for the night and have everyone hang out/crash there, rates are very affordable, it ranges but i doubt it'd be anything beyond $25, and that's at the very most.

this is the first of a few tentatively scheduled meetups, more or less can happen depending on interest/availability.

the floor is open for discussion

If you're down to hang out around the weird boutiques that'd be great, not too sure how far everything is but I'd love to see nepenthes etc!

^ nepenthes and dsm aren't in the soho/tribeca area, but they're a relatively quick jaunt on the subway and within walking distance of each other

I have my high school class reunion, friend's birthday, and now this meetup all in one weekend. I should just combine everything and confuse the fuck out of everyone.

I have to stop at Nepenthes for some nonsense so it would be cool to hang there.

Got Halal Bros earlier today.

While I was putting sauce all over the plate, it collapsed and went everywhere – all over the sidewalk and the side of the Uniqlo shopping bag.

Somehow, none of it got on my clothes.

As for next weekend...

How many people would be interested in staying overnight? Wake up in the city to grab some brunch? I'm looking around AirBnB, and it seems like it might be around $50/person, but possibly cheaper with enough people

Huh so apparently I didn't look at a calendar and assumed 13/14 was Saturday/Sunday

I work full-time, so I'll only be able to meet up on the 14th/Saturday (unless we do AirBnB and I come into the city on Friday evening)

:/
