lol, i remember when i went to uni i expected everyone to listen to nmh and watch subtitled movies. turned out everyone in my flat preferred to throw up in the communal sinks and break crockery / tables / other things that didn't belong to them. It wasn't until my last year i really became friends with people that had similar interests but even then i realised it didn't really matter much. i had very little in common 'interest' wise with my closest friends at uni (bookworm that read theology, footballer who worked at a chip shop etc and okay, one guy who i did share exact music and film taste with) and i would give anything to go back to riding bikes in the middle of the night, going out for ice cream, playing golden eye multiplayer or just sitting at the kitchen table drinking coffee and saying nothing with them.

while at a restaurant for lunch, i had to go to the bathroom, and noticed that it had a full length mirror, so i decided i might as well take a snapchat fitpic. however, the bathroom was fuckin tiny and the mirror was right next to the entrance, so while prepping my phone and aiming it at the mirror someone barged in behind me and we had the most awkward exchange of both going "AHHH" and me running away

I felt similarly betrayed by how low brow my uni life was, though to be honest I was at a pretty low brow university. I think high end unis do obviate this problem somewhat though this may be wishful thinking. (Wishful isn't the right word. What's the word for the type of thinking which may not be true, but you're doing it because it aligns with your inner tendency to punish yourself?)

I live in st louis. so far have not experienced any craziness firsthand but I'm stunned and frankly disgusted by what has been developing over the past few days. I don't know if I ever would have considered myself "proud" to be an stl resident but I'm certainly not right now, considering its seeming hurtling trajectory toward becoming a police-state. there's definitely an air of mild worry/shame/uncertainty/what have you around. I'm especially worried as there have apparently been riots and a massive police presence right near where my dad lives; I will be going to stay with him soon and will keep updating if anything big happens.

regarding the posts above, i remember talking with people last year about all the preconceptions we had before going to uni. it does seem to be only the very top universities that seem to have any relation to the (now rather outdated perhaps) view of british uni life revolving around high culture and/or socialist party membership cards.

i reckon that most universities probably have the more high-brow experience that some people expect, as well as all the radical political protesting types, but those 'scenes' are probably a lot harder to find than the typical 'uni lad' stereotype that seems to dominate now. i'm quite happy with the reasonably-high-ranking-without-being-too-high-ranking uni i'm currently at though as it seems to have a nice mix. pretty much suits me down to the ground as i like to watch German-language arthouse films and read mid-20th century American flaxy, but also derive a great deal of enjoyment from getting piss drunk, eating a god-awful kebab and then throwing up said kebab all over someone else's carpet.

people in the minneapolis bike community are nothing sort of amazing. everyone i meet continues to be welcoming, friendly and darn right cool people. met many new friends tonight and shared beers and laughs on a bridge overlooking a highway. a really great summer night.
