Have you used git or any sort of version control? Github is really just a fancy server to put all your repos on, git is where the magic happens.

so, in addition to favorite language (none)/text editor (vim)/algorithm (quantum bogosort), what is everyone's favorite shell?
I like zsh, which I've been using for a while, but am mildly intrigued by fish. (tried using it a long time ago, but contrary to its claims, it did NOT work that well "out of the box"...or at least, not as well as I would have liked...)

does anyone have any good resources for learning R? I already tried codeschool, looking for something that goes a little further. most of the youtube tutorials suck.
I have no background in programming besides trying to change the CSS on my livejournal page in 2001 so i feel grossly unqualified to be using it but any resources would be great

anyone else play around on project euler? My intro c++ class is boring as all hell as I've already taken a mid level java class, so I just work on these during that time. Made it through the first ten or so in these last two weeks. I think it's kind of fun. I almost always brute force the programs. maybe at some point I'll go back and try to perfect them for efficiency.

I had to do a C test and a Python test in the past week at work and I sucked pretty bad on them so now I'm like terrified that I'm losing all my chops in those languages and I need to get a new job (I probably do)

Anyone do anything with Arduino/Beagleboard (or any other type of board)? What kind of stuff did you make? I'm looking to get into it - did a tiny fraction of it in college and enjoyed the hands on aspect of it. Wanted to see other's thoughts.

I played around with an RPi for a while. It was fun to learn and learn about SSH and setting up my own server. Also made a thing with the camera module and a few GPIO programs.
I want so badly to build a remote drone with RPi + cellular phone. The only thing stopping me is costs and lazyness.

I used one for a class where we programmed it to drive a car to follow lines of tape. Was pretty cool, but I haven't fiddled with it since.
Lotta cool stuff out there though, have fun!
I kinda want to take a Raspberry Pi and make .

Well now it's real. Someone made a command line application to order Jimmy John's.

ive become the go-to person for help in my programming class...
little do they know i won't have any classes with them after this term
seriously tho it's the perfect mix of flattering and annoying
also, looking for recs on good resources to learn some tech skills that aren't necessary for the standard eng/cs progression. sort of like the programming equivalent of number theory ??
edit: codecademy sucks, i feel like it doesn't teach enough to get you started on your own stuff or koans or euler stuff. basically all it does is like "here's the syntax in this specific language for reading input and handling strings". other 2 look promising tho
