Only God forgives is neat. Initial reaction was negative but that's more on account of it not being what I thought it would be/was hoping it was.

Saw Insterstellar last night. Wasn't really interested in this movie but bf is huge Nolan nut so I didnt have much choice. I went to see it without a lot of expectations—I didnt even watch the trailer beforehand. Now that I've given the movie a bit of time to stew in my head I'd say it's a so-so movie. Starts off weak and ends in a typical Hollywood ending where everything is resolved with a neat bow. There were some cheesy parts but that's par for the course from a Nolan film. The story unfolds in a nonlinear fashion (expected) and explores similar themes as his previous films (also expected). Dialogue was a bit clunky at times because the characters needed to explain the science stuff for the audience throughout the movie. All that blathering on about how love transcends space and time made me cringe in my seat. Soundtrack-wise Hans Zimmer's work never really connected with me and it's the same with this movie. There were several nods to 2001:ASO and I kind of expected Interstellar to be an a heavy handed homage of sorts to the former and towards the end I was ready for a similar ending but it didnt pan out that way, thankfully.

The best thing about this movie were the space sequences. It is the saving grace of this movie and I regret not seeing it in imax. Say what you will about how big budget movies about space exploration oftentimes tell a mediocre story but they do deliver on the visuals.

I had pretty high expectations for Interstellar being a huge Nolan fan and I have to say I really enjoyed it. I disagree that the beginning was weak but one thing that did really annoy me throughout the beginning was Murph's acting. Matthew mcconaughey completely carried the scenes with him and Murph as her acting was atrocious. The ending explanation was pretty weak



But overall the movie was an incredible experience as a whole. If you like visually stunning movies see it, you won't be disappointed.

Plus the surprise cameo was pretty hilarious

fury - damn, this was one of the most riveting and intense war movies i'd seen in a while, i'd say the most intense since saving private ryan. the battle scenes were more intense (third time using that word) than the normandy scene in spr, in my opinion. the way they showed the lights and had the whistling noises as the artillery flew by, just damn. interesting that the characters aren't all that likable, either. shia labeouf was pretty amazing, but then i have an everlasting love for him and his scruffy facial hair and beat up boots

gone girl - thoroughly enjoyed this movie, what a trip. fincher + trent reznor is an infallible combo, ben affleck was amazing and rosamund pike really blew me away. currently reading the book and really enjoying it as well.

interstellar - saw this last night. visually, fucking astounding. emotionally, very heavy--i cried multiple times. matthew mcconaughey is a mumbler... his performance was good but he drawls through 10000% of his lines. don't really care for anne hathaway so she was only a blip on my radar. some of the dialogue was cheesy as hell. went into the movie expecting something firmly rooted in science (after the myriad of articles that have come out about how nolan and crew consulted with leading scientists, etc etc) and then found the more sci-fi-y things a little harder to swallow because of that expectation of realism. definitely do not regret watching this movie, though. it was a trip, glad i saw it in theaters. it shit on gravity. the tension was also fucking palpable, hans zimmer's score was putting me on edge. i wish i had a firmer grasp of space and science though, i feel like i would've enjoyed the movie more if all the technical stuff didn't fly right over my head. the ending was meh, as everyone has said.

i did read an interesting little blurb about how people find nolan's work to be emotionally cold; that really resonated with me. inception was dazzling and challenging and fun, but it is true, it's not emotional at all, really. i didn't really care for cobb's plight. interstellar is much, much more emotional. i was heavily invested in the survival and well-being of matthew mcconaughey's character and his family.

big hero 6 - right after watching interstellar we decided to watch big hero 6 because both of us were in a deep, dark, introspective daze and we wanted something happy to snap us out of it. movie was awesome. very smart, very funny, and the robot dude thing (baymax) is the cutest fucking thing ever, i really want one. also it was cool to have asians starring in a movie. highly recommend.

oh and also like a month or two ago i watched galaxy quest for the first time. what the fuck. that movie is hilarious.

I think everyone is being extremely hard on Interstellar as a whole. I too hold Nolan to high expectations, but I feel bad that I do so. That said, I loved the movie. I loved everything about it. I ignored as many trailers as I could before this movie and I think it enhanced my experience through it. I was blown away by this movie. I can't believe how many times I actually cried through it. I also loved loved loved how often they brought relativity into the movie.





All in all, an incredible movie. I think everyone should see it. It didn't even feel like it was ~3 hours long.

Godard's La Chinoise



Damning criticism/satire of the New Left and student radicals of the late '60s - we follow the studies and preparation of a group of young Maoist wannabe-revolutionaries as they make effort to distinguish themselves from the Communist organisations (seen as Marxist Revisionists) and bring about revolution through terrorism.

Extremely off-beat and bizarre in presentation (I was especially fond of the random and jarringly abrupt bursts of music that intrude frequently), the vivid colours are amazing and the camera extremely playful with its framing and motion. The whole production really feels like the end result of these teenagers' theatrics and naive zeal.

The use of communist and socialist artwork and paraphernalia (especially the Little Red Book) as decorative items, toys and visual gags are especially telling.

Extremely strong jumper inspo in this film too.

i literally watched this last night, weird. i think the techniques are godard's "anti-cinema" an attempt to show the triviality of the constructs of modern culture. the roots of this are still very marxist which i thought was a funny and kind of ironic juxtaposition with the theme of the film

saw nightcrawler a couple days ago, i really enjoyed it. the ending wasn't great, but the rest of the movie was fantastic, and it was refreshing to watch a movie with an unlikeable main character. plus, it had , so bonus points for that.

Saw John Wick last night; had my sides splitting the whole time. I guess Keanu is just taking what he can get at this point because damn...shit was too funny I couldn't take him seriously in this. Cute puppy made it worth it though.

I thought John Wick was pretty enjoyable to be honest. Yeah it was totally over the top and Keanu was...well, Keanu, but some of the scenes were really well done and the fighting was cool. Also kinda liked the comic book type 'assassins underworld' they created. Just good entertainment which is sometimes all I want my movies to be.

I actually really enjoyed Inter Stellar as well, the end was rushed and I didn't like how quickly and neatly everything came together and worked out..but other than that I quite liked the movie and thought that the score was perfect.

Absolutely beautiful film that I'm sure a lot of people can resonate with. Actual musician (lead singer of Canines) deals with what creativity and art is in the face of tragedy on multiple levels. A lot of people didn't like Bogart's acting but I thought it was spot-on for what he was dealing with.

^that line always gets me, I find myself playing this movie as background noise really often.

Same director, Dustin Daniel Cretton. This was much more commercially successful which made me really happy because I Am Not A Hipster was kind of a flop. My ex really identified with this film wrt cutting/depression.

Highly recommend.

Saw Birdman last night



First off the cinematography was incredible, how it was made to look like one continuous shot. The score was good in the beginning and then when it came back in the end but I thought it got repetitive somewhere in the middle. Would have to see it again to be sure. Think I'm entering spoiler territory so don't open the spoiler if you haven't seen it yet.



some fantastic performances in this. thought Norton was the best but Keaton was great as well as Emma Stone.Was very self-aware and funny also. Definitely go see it.

force majeure-- intimate yet aggressively angled shots give the viewer an uncomfortably close view into the marriage between two stereotypic swedes. closely examines gender roles in a marriage, as well as how children confront strife in their parents marriage. this, combined with hilariously uncomfortable dinner-table conversations and social situations left me writhing in my seat in the best of ways. highly recommended



skeleton twins-- takes a lot of formulaic things -- bill hader's acting ability, stereotypical gay man in a mainstream US movie, moving to LA to become an actor -- and presents them in a way that's new and unexpected, managing to avoid over-done and painful caricatures. advertised as a comedy, but it's much darker in reality, and left me fairly introspective and depressed. i think i enjoyed it, but i'm still not sure

Beginners



A graphic designer falls in love with a French actress shortly after his father dies.



His father comes out as gay and begins to enjoy his life as a gay man, shortly after coming out he dies due to complications with his health/cancer.



He meets this French woman at a party where she won't speak because of her laryngitis.



He dresses as Freud at this party and takes his dog because his dog seems to only be comfortable around his owner.



Super cute film, it's basically a series of flashbacks with some narration by the graphic designer in his attempts at love being inspired by his father's attempts.
