I'm thinking about picking up an electric guitar. Does anyone have any suggestions? The Les Paul II Special Grey's really good reviews for beginners and it's priced relatively well. Also is there a huge difference in a 10 vs 15W amp? I'm looking for something inexpensive but not cheap.

Going to see floating points right now and then Bill Converse/Willie Burns right afterwards, quite the night!
Update: The speculator dropped acid rain, promptly went nuts.

Caught a great concert the other night at the Middle East in Boston (Cambridge actually). It was the album release part for IAN SWEET, awesome band, and the new album is great. The other bands playing were Lina Tullgren, Kal Marks, Iji, and Horse Jumper of Love. I highly recommend checking out all of them, but especially Horse Jumper, they've got a great sound and jizz.

Like that Catherine Christer Hennix , have you heard Meredith Monk - Dolmen Music? That's my go to tune for some droning / chanting vibes.

Continuing the ambient theme I bought this yesterday:

Scene II has some well good noises in. Cover art is great too.

Wish Travis Scott could get his shit together and be a more authentically likeable human being because I don't think there's any contemporary artist I struggle with enjoying as much as him.

Next time he comes to town I'll buy tickets without looking at the price but at the same time I don't like telling people I'm a big fan

So what some of your guys' favorite projects so far this year? Both Blonde and Bottomless Pit have had constant play from me, the new Preoccupations album is pretty awesome as well. Unfortunately most hip-hop releases have been pretty lack luster for me so far, Untitled Unmastered was cool but other than that I can't think of a project that really wowed me. Hopefully this new Danny Brown project will be good because so far it looks like this year will be a wash in terms of hip-hop.

totally forgot that was announced! Now I'm super pumped for the 30th, new Danny and Iver gonna be sick.

@anth have you listened to clipping.?

It's not the most accessible rap project, but it's incredible stuff. I strongly recommend listening to the whole album, Splendor & Misery.

I just discovered Violet Cold. Think Deafheaven with 100% more synths.

Edit: Dunno if the youtube embeds are showing up for you guys, it's blank on my webpage. Here are the links just in case:

I've had a ridiculous month in terms of music consumption. I've been into emo for the last 4 months? but I've just been blowing through all the albums I could want ever want to. The monthly playlist of just songs I've picked out of albums since the 1st is already 18 hours. I was surrounded by people for orientation week, so I think I'm trying to get in all the loneliness I can. Also, I really like a girl again, so I have fuel for my melodrama. :woop:

Anyway, some musical thoughts!
Tell me if you disagree so we can have discussions and you can tell me why I should like albums more than I do.

- No Burden by Lucy Dacus kinda disappointed me. The songwriting is nice, quaint, tender, everything I wanted it to be, but it's so samey, for lack of a better word. None of the songs are sonically interesting enough for me to return to, even though I really liked the way Troublemaker Doppelganger developed. Some of the tracks that had more lively instrumentation felt like singles for the purpose of singles, but I guess I'm just being a contrarian.

- I really wanted Shmilco by Wilco to be great, since YHF was my first big kid album I listened to after my brother asked me if I ever listen to good music. I agree with what other reviewers have said, Shmilco is another well-written rock album that rewards listens but certainly does not demand them. It's not samey, and it's not totally a classic rock album, but some of the songs that are absolutely affected can be a chore to listen to. Other songs have the opposite problem: they had a single covered with a picture of a man hung from a ceiling fan, and even though Locator was one of my favorite tracks, it's still not much to remember. Track titles stuck with me more easily than what they sound like. The singles were absolutely great, I remember texting a friend that if this album was as good as If I Ever Was A Child all the way through, it'd be their best album since YHF. Someone To Lose would be a Summerteeth track if they'd pulled the synths out that they loved in 1999. Anyway, I'm kinda disappointed, but there's still some good content in here.

- The Glow Pt. 2 by The Microphones blew my socks off. It might be the most frontloaded album I know, but I loved the whole twenty tracks. The obvious favorites are the tracks that head the album - I Want Wind to Blow, The Glow Pt. 2, and The Moon - but I'll also be listening to I Felt My Size, I Felt Your Shape, and I Am Bored (all for pisces reasons) for a while to come. I'd describe the sound of the album as Death Cab for Cutie produced by Jim O'Rourke. I can only imagine listening to this in 2001 along with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and just having the time of my life in my bedroom.

- Trick by Alex G was really nice and feels like freshman year should. Songs like People, Clouds, or Mary are so vague that they got right into my angst. I haven't gotten through any of his other albums but I think it's almost silly how similar they seem to me.

- I actually kinda wanted Teens of Denial by Car Seat Headrest to be more dynamic, but it was the rock album that I thought it'd be. I listened through Twin Fantasy once after, because it's a much more tender affair, but I didn't get enough out of the songs that I listened to without a lyric sheet. I'll give Willy more time.

- I feel silly talking about I Had A Dream That You Were Mineby Hamilton Leithauser & Rostam because nobody freaked out about it like I did. The singles, particularly When The Truth Is... sounded like what I wanted Vampire Weekend to sound like. Rostam is in full stride, and I absolutely adore that his father wrote these songs (lyrics?), it turns some of the cliches into a very wholesome thing. Everyone should check this album out. Listen to it with your family. Spotify is already recommending Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen as similar artists.

- I don't think I gave My Womanby Angel Olsen enough of a listen to review it, but I didn't get much out of it. Loved Sister though. These songs are going to slot into movies so easily.

- Supersonic Home by Adventures is the power pop country math rock album that best encompasses the way I feel about swim team in suburban South Carolina. Definitely got a lot of listens out of me, maybe even more than it's technically worth but these songs are so sweet. Favorites: Dream Blue Haze; Absolution, Warmth Requited

- If Home Like NoPlace Is There by The Hotelier is a pop punk album, it's the best thing to happen to pop punk since Enema of the State. The songwriting is very open, very transparent about the content. It wrapped me up like a blanket. Screaming never sounds this good.

- New Alhambra & Holo Pleasures / California Dreamin' by Elvis Depressedly may have come too late for me. Great pop songs, perhaps too transparent about their content. Really glorifies being a manic pixie dream boy and crying over the art school girl down the hall. Hypothetically speaking. The band is almost problematically sweet in songs like Wastes of Time or Inside You. Great way to feel lonely.

- I loved both The Beyond / Where The Giants Roam and Apocalypse by Thundercat. I had listened to some singles prior to these, but I was entertained the whole way. I wish there were more R&B artists like him, the songwriting is not incredible but I feel like anybody who wants to collaborate w Thundercat will make a great product.

I'm giving up on reviewing every, or even most albums I listened to, but if you're wondering it's mostly philadelphia emo (editor's choice: marietta, perspective a.l.h.t.h.), 00's UK dubstep (skream, benga, and friends), and classic lo-fi/indie rock (pavement, guided by voices, built to spill, yo la tengo) from here on.

I put some of my favorite tracks in the spoiler because this is already an obnoxiously long post. Cheers~

pc music is something that's always bothered me.

not the fact that exists or the music or the image, i'm okay with all that, what bothers me is the praise it gets from music publications and fans. i actually don't even disagree with the praise (pc music is actually very good), but to me every time I see it, it just highlights the fact that most music critics (and "music fans") just straight up don't understand electronic dance music.

to give you an example, the reviews for Flume's latest album and the reviews for the album Worlds by Porter Robinson, or the Wedding Bells EP from Cashmere Cat. Madeon's Adventure got a good rating from pitchfork, albeit still under the threshold of best new music, but even then it's still an outlier.

i've never read a review from any publication that really sinks their teeth in to the sound design, composition and programming of an electronic dance song.

the song "fellow feeling" by porter robinson is a goddamn marvel of arrangement & sound design but it gets half a sentence written about it in the pitchfork review of its album. TheNeedleDrop doesn't even mention the song in his review of the album.

another thing that makes me feel this way is the fact that you can tell from both their reviews and their lack of coverage of lesser known electronic artists, that pitchfork and other critics just don't really follow the scene, and aren't really familiar with what's going on in it, or what the fans of electronic dance music are actually all about. i'm still waiting for the day when I'll see a review for an EP or single put out by the likes of Ekali, Eprom, G Jones, Bleep Bloop, WhereisAlex, Gyrnpret (and the rest of Soda Island), Daruma, Josh Pan, Cashmere Cat, Shawn Wasabi or Lido (aka trippy turtle, who was basically doing the PC Music sound years and years ago)

it's just disappointing that the art of sound design doesn't seem to be a very respected one- or even one that's understood at all by music critics. whenever pitchfork DOES seem to bring up sound design it's generally in the form of a long string of buzz-words.

the fascination with PC Music is especially confusing to me, because most of the people who shower them with praise don't seem too invested in the electronic dance music scene otherwise. they seem completely uninterested or even unaware of the things the sound of PC music originates from, ie jersey club and non-festival-headliner edm trap.

most of the discussion around PC music seems to be focused on the image and aesthetic that they present. they don't seem to delve in to it much deeper than that, or talk about their reputation or role in the edm scene. and they seem to have some weird ideas about how pc music is completely unique and their sound is otherwise unheard of, which is just obviously untrue to anyone who follows edm, at least underground edm.

maybe it's all just because a visualizer logo that pulsates to the bass (ala trap nation) is perfect repellent to an image-obsessed music critic?

anyways those are my thoughts on this. here's some links to some of the artists i mentioned.

I really enjoyed Nicolas Jaar's Space is Only Noise and his Darkside collab with Dave Harrington. I've found that his music needs a couple of listens to appreciate. I listened to Sirens last night and didn't get much from it, but I'm going to hold off making any judgments until I can dedicate the album a little more time. There's a lot happening in his music, but it takes time to get past the fact that it all sounds a bit monotonous and droning.

Space is Only Noise is one of my most playeds on last.fm. The timing may be deceptive, but he released Nymphs recently, and a lot of the tracks on there are from 4-5 years ago; so listening to Sirens shortly after feels like it's a huge departure from his previous stuff.
