what is the cost of living like for a university student in van? bonus points if you can compare it to other Canadian cities.

ie: the cheapest rent in innercity/university area edmonton is around $550/mo, food costs X, transit costs Y, etc.

it's as bad as you've heard probably worse

its ok. rent is bad compared to most places in canada but not out of this world for a city of this size (ie i know ottawa is similar and I imagine fake canada/montreal/calgary are too). most people who wanna live on the cheap/near their school (only a few smaller campuses are downtown) get a house between 3-6 people and pay like 5-800.

if you do want to live downtown its a fair bit more expensive, probably like 1100-1600 for studios depending on location/size/etc. sharing a 2 bed would be a bit cheaper but still around 1k each i imagine

tuition is like it is anywhere in canada, transit is free for students, i dunno how much different food is but i can't imagine its a crazy amount.

Yeah, a guy I know is paying over a grand for an apartment near Chinatown. Technically you pay for your transit pass in your university student fees. Transit currently sucks ass and you're going to have to get used to elderly women elbowing you as they force their way onto the bus. Food can be really expensive or really cheap depending on where you go out to eat. Groceries are reasonable unless you are buying weird shit from Whole Foods. Tuition is pretty cheap if you're from Canada like 8k for UBC and I think cheaper for SFU. It's gonna be pretty expensive in Van no matter what you do. I know my buddy was kind of shocked when he moved out from Edmonton.

suuuper cheap for SFU. idk what it is for 5 classes, but it is about $2000 a semester for 3 classes and less for first/second year

nahh, most of those aren't that bad. I applaud them for putting effort into making something. Keep in mind that you share the same hobby as them. Can't really hate them for not having the same tastes as you. Besides making fun of what people wear is such a waste of time anyway
