Definitely looks like something yeast like growing/fermenting in there. Should probably ask him what he's doing.

Does anyone use a burr grinder? Is it worth it over a regular blade grinder? I love my current pourover setup but I think that's the major site for improvement.

Nothing like a great brew, in a mug of substance

Grinder is the most important investment in coffee brewing. Burrs will crush your beans to yield an even grind, blades will chop them up into uneven portions. Uneven grind probably means you won't have a consistent cup (not to say that you can't have a good cup with an uneven grind, but it's a lot harder to get it consistent).

If you want to go into the scientific/techno mumbo jumbo behind coffee brewing:

, if you can't stomach the price of an electric burr grinder, a manual could be really worthwhile if you brew with a medium-fine grind (gets more inconsistent on coarse grinds). Hario Mini Mill (for single-cup) and Skerton (multiple cups) are both generally well-received, both are around $30 on Amazon. The one complaint I have is that it's difficult to reproduce the same grind if you change the setting, which is a pain in the ass if you switch between multiple brewing methods.

I've found a general liking to strong, sweet coffee drinks. Lee's coffee (from Lee's Sandwiches), mocha lattes, and Thai iced coffees to some extent, fit the bill of this sort of coffee that I like. I believe the Vietnamese restaurants also have/had a version of drink similar Lee's which I enjoy.

Besides an (iced) mocha latte, what are some easy sweet & strong coffee drinks I could find or make relatively easily?

do whatever makes you happy. About 5 if you go by the standard tsp per cup, but you can adjust up or down for personal preference. Honestly I use something like half of that.

I've stopped making cold brew as my default coffee beverage, it's truly no longer summer. Hot coffee drinks from now on.

finally got to try out my aeropress. makes a pretty good cup especially with the reverse method- although during my first attempt I accidentally attached the parts on backwards and ended up with coffee all over the table...

my mom prefers her keurig and thinks i'm silly for putting "so much effort" in to 1 cup of coffee. mom you just don't understand me!!!

Where can i buy a big tea pot. I love tea and am fine with using loose leaf, but when i brew i hate having to heat it up again etc. it just feels like i'm wasting the tea too. It'd be nice to be able have more than 2 cups at a time

Coffee shop on first floor now offers a "Nitro cold brew". The fact this costs as much $$$ as a Nitro stout would at a bar (for less liquid and surely less alcohol!) is a bit ridiculous to me but sometimes you got to splurge for the novelty.

so on the topic of flat whites:

I'm convinced its nothing more than just an in between the 5oz modern cap and 12 oz latte (sitting at 8oz approx). I don't know where the "mythical differences" of a small latte and a flat white came from but in any respectable third wave coffee shop as far as I understand all milk drinks are made with the same latte style milk, in which the foam is interspersed through the milk. Thus, the only difference between the drinks becomes the espresso to milk ratio.

that being said, I think Handsome (rest in pepperoni) had it right by dumbing down their menu to espresso, and espresso+milk (varying sizes, 3oz, 5oz, 8oz). In the end you are using third wave styled steamed milk the proportion (and espresso drinks pretty much are always a 1-2oz espresso amount from a double ristretto shot). Although places that do more traditional drinks you might see cappucino type milk used again but its definitely dying in popularity, at least in the craft coffee scene.

also for all intents and purposes cortados and gibraltars are the same

edit: on a semi but not really related note.
coffee grounds make great supplements to soil. so if you want to go super ~hipster~ and grow your cool ~unique~ plants, you can bolster the potting soil with coffee grounds. (but do make sure the acidity of the soil works out for your plant you don't wanna kill it)

Yeah its probably pretty good, depending on how much you can fuck with the timing and ratios of water to grounds and stuff

but just so egregious given that its not even like a regular coffee maker where you just throw grounds in and press brew, you're still going to want to wet the filter first, and grind fresh beans, and experiment with how you brew for different beans.

unrelatedly #dailycortado is the worst hashtag

especially when the beverage in the photo isn't even a cortado

Back into enjoying the tea life. Sadly, the only tea shop in town is closing after winter break. Anywhere good to buy online (+ if I can buy sample sizes)?

I ran out of coffee and need some quick recommendations to order online (hi ). I tried kuma; specifically the red bear espresso which ended up being too sweet but I still enjoyed it. I tried something more local, . Got a french roast and a random espresso which were both great. I had a blue bottle sample that I thought was okay. Looking for any recommendations. Was looking at but I might just go try a couple more from George Howell. (Brewing with aeropress btw)
