What are your thoughts on the record so far?
I'm gonna have to give it a few more listens and some time to completely make up my mind, but so far it seems pretty good. Sounds like something the boys have wanted to get out of their systems for a while - but in a good way.
Not gonna lie though, I miss the spacious, ambient and panoramic production from Merriweather Post Pavilion and Fall Be Kind a lot. Quite the interesting evolution actually, as AnCo get older (they're in their mid 30s/early 40s now I think? might be wrong) their songs get way more in-your-face, lacking any kind of subtlety that their earlier records had. Apparently this was recorded in the same studio as Pet Sounds, which must've been a lot of fun for the band to experience and I think some of that translates to the music,
I wonder if Panda wrote "Boys Latin", looked at it and said to Geo and Avey "alright dudes this is what our songs are gonna sound like from now on" lol. So I'm still kinda conflicted. This is a good record. It's fun, interesting, AnCo definitely had a great time making this and you can hear it. But, at times, I feel "trapped" in all these sounds, with no space to breathe or escape for a moment. Listening to this record can be kind of a claustrophobic experience, the absolute opposite of what I've experienced with MPP and Fall Be Kind.
My fav songs so far are Vertical, On Delay and Golden Gal

I love the high energy in all the songs. Floridada definitely sets the pace for the entire album. Upon reading the Rolling Stone interview from the band, it seems this was their exact intent and they also wanted to tone down the amount of reverb they used. It seems a bit unfair to criticise them for not having slow lush songs like Bluish or Guys Eyes if that's not the context they were working in but you can still hear flickers of it in tracks like Hocus Pocus. So far my favourite tracks are The Burglars, Bagels in Kiev, Summing the Wretch and Golden Gal. I don't find the Boys Latin voice over thing to be annoying but I have to concede that I can't give an impartial opinion and I would like to hunt down The Quietus reviewer, strap some electric cords to his genitals and force him to type out an article that doesn't take a hot, huge steaming dump on Painting With
