I've realized that I'm just really awkward to be around. I feel like when I'm talking to people I don't have any interesting to say and because of that I'm really conservative. It's making meeting new people tough. I'm trying to read different kind of stuff, listen to more types of music, watch more sports, etc to become more interesting, but it doesn't seem to make conversation easier.

Best way around that is to be really friendly (not excessively though). No one will mind that that you don't have much to say. I'd also guess that you wouldn't feel as awkward. I'm sure they weren't perceiving you as too awkward unless you're staring at the floor or something

how do you console people? I feel like it's inappropriate/counterproductive/generally bad to try and fix or work through the actual problem with them, because I feel like most people just want to vent, but I don't really know how to go beyond "damn that sucks dude, sorry to hear it"

ask them if they want to talk about it. if they don't, don't push it. you can't like force them to let you help them, yknow?

yeah. I mean, this usually seems to happen after they've sort of described it / laid it all out for me to hear. it's probably cathartic for them to talk it out but I don't want to punctuate it with a lame sounding summation remark.

Touch their shoulder and say "That sounds really tough, if you ever want to talk more about it give me a call we can get a drink."

I went to the gym here at school for the first time in months. I felt so awkward because I didn't even know what some of the machines did. So I just stood kind of near the corner and did basic exercises with a couple of dumbbells.

Don't worry about looking out of place, no one cares. Most machines have a "how to use" sticker on them so you can follow those.
