Portugal looked really weak against Germany - definitely wouldn't be able to tell that they're the 2nd favourite to go through from that performance. Pepe is unbelievable... no excuse for acting like that in an important game when you're already losing. what a child. Can't believe Ronaldo managed to hit a one man wall.

Overworked bobbin sorry. Armando Ianucci is the new football blather guide:

Yaaaaaaay Belgium!!! Really wasn't a fan of how Algeria played football... not surprising that they didn't score a single goal in the last world cup.

Brazil / Mexico tonight could be tasty...

Mexico have a pretty decent record against Brazil and they are by no means a bad team. Not very surprised they got a draw tbh especially after seeing the way Brazil played against Croatia (uninspired imo). Ochoa did a great job in goal for them too.

Brazil will probably still be able to go through first on goal difference though unless Mexico can pull off something very special against Croatia.

Good stuff from Belgium (once they got going in the 2nd half, at least). Had some money on them winning as well so definitely not complaining at that comeback.

Just read that America beat Ghana? What an incredible upset. Americans must be feeling really great about that.

I'm always amused that whenever there is a World Cup, everyone writes an OP ed or does a piece about how THIS will be the year that Americans finally catch on with the rest of the world and love soccer/football. (, , )

The end of a great era for Spain.

Despite losing it was good seeing Australia put up a decent fight vs. Netherlands. Cahill's challenge on Indi was ruthless but he scored a damn good goal - hope Indi is okay and can recover for later stages but his situation doesn't look great... concussion i think?

Holland game was good. Look a bit weak at the back at times which is a bit worrying.

Spain game was a little sad / embarrassing, but also exhilarating to see Chile play some great football. Could have been 3 or 4. It's a shame to see those Spanish players go home but to me none of them really looked like they wanted to be there anyway. Even when Australia were trailing in the final minutes you could see the fight in them... not sure it was really ever there for Spain.

some classic punditing from glenn hoddle before the cameroon croatia game-

- suggests that "there might be a box threat from lallana" which doesn't mean what he meant
- refers to the cameroonian team as 'the cameroons', which as we know is actually the name of a racist 50s doowop group
- suggests a front five of gerrard, lallana, sterling, welbeck, sturridge to play uruguay. right then glenn

Still so surprised at the poor grammar from some commentators. "them players" etc, happens continually. How can you be 40/50 years old on live telly and not be able to get this? Loved Hansen correcting Danny Murphy tonight... "the best team won", for Hansen to then say "yeah, the better team won". A GOAL FOR GRAMMAR!!!! Saying that though Murphy is still pretty good. I like him.

As usual England are clueless against a team with a plan, albeit one that involves kicking and relying on Suarez.

After the equaliser, it was depressingly inevitable to see England's increased vigour going into doing everything QUICKLY, but with no greater thought about what they're doing or why they're doing it.

actually a legit question but...is there a lingua franca of sorts in the soccer/football world that a lot of players can just yell at refs/opposing players in international matches? I imagine there's gotta be something like that in the highly multinational world of soccer clubs.

^ Nah i think often both players and refs will be able to speak a common language. If one player can't there will often be another who can translate. Otherwise body language can convey a lot.

Keep in mind at these big tournaments a lot of the players will have travelled around quite a bit during their club years so can pick up useful lingo in other languages.

Switzerland should be a good test of how the 'new' France can perform against decent teams. Hopefully we can crush the Swiss. (smiling)
