Sublime is my text editor of choice atm.

Do my python work in PyCharm, which is most of my work . Python is the best why can't everything be in Python?

Currently working on an OS kernel for my Computer Systems class (in C with a smidge of x86 assembly). Somehow I'm the only one in my group of 4 that understands how paging works.

Has anyone used Go before? I've heard great things but I cannot for the life of me think of anything I would want to use it for.

I have a "personal" and an "academic" github, I don't have root access on my lab computer so committing is a bitch and I rarely do it. I should probably do more ~recreational programming~ but it's so much easier to google "How do i do <task> in <programming language>" and then figuring shit out from there.

I haven't done OOP in a long time so when I get excruciatingly bored I work on implementing in java to teach myself how neural nets.

I'm a senior in highschool and I am finishing up my AP computer science course which is Java based. I downloaded python and played with it for a day, but was kind of confusing. What should I learn/what is fun to learn? I'm likely going to go to school for computer science and will probably go for c++, I think?

I took AP CS last year, and I'm taking computer science III this year. I haven't learned very much because my teacher is pretty bad. Everyone failed the AP exam last year, and this year she switched to a new curriculum, which is alright but I haven't learned much coding. I'm gonna try to finish learning Java over the summer because that's what she taught us last year, but I know very little and forgot most of it. Where should I start?

- favorite text editors are emacs/vim
- favorite language PYTHON, racket/scheme
- least favorite language: Assembly
- favorite algorithm....karp rabin?

why would people have >2 text editors? they're good for different languages! emacs is great for scheme/racket, vim not as much.

I feel like a "bad" CS major sometimes because I don't program for fun -___-

, please do. I got a BS in comp sci from a good enough college and good enough grades and amazon was the only software related interview I got (didn't go b/c travel anxiety lol). want more freedom in deciding your future? start working on personal projects. thought grinding through algos/data structures/etc was enough, but it's not :((

Oh geez, maybe I need to explain myself. I DO program outside of school - all the time - I just don't find it "fun," maybe more of a means to an end? Given a Friday night, I won't be writing in scala or whatever. I'm hopefully going to grad school (not for CS though) so I'm not too worried about jobs or "looking good" for HR.

I'm taking some OpenGL stuff but it's in C++ and so I'm not sure how much carries over.

PyCharm (you'll still need to install Python) and Learn Python the Hard Way (html unless you feel like paying).

text: vim
favourite language: python, c#
least favourite language: java
favourite algorithm: simulated annealing (Monte Carlo algorithms are super cool even if I only sort of understand), or simplex

Learn Python the Hard Way would be a good place to start; you could also check out .

I've been meaning to check out go as well, mainly out of boredom with python. The problem is that I know python so well that it's hard to justify taking the time to do something in go when I know it'll take me 10 times longer. Since I wouldn't have a chance to use it in my day job I'd probably forget all of it anyways.

Yeah it's pretty hard to pick something up with just the goal of picking it up. I find I need to find some sort of project that I want to complete, and learn something in the process. Although no matter what I do in my free time, it's never going to compare to the mastery you can demonstrate by working with a language/tool/whatever 40 hours a week.

Though with xkcd there's always a hidden joke in the alt-text, so here's .

Long story short, drinking converts some short term memory brain cells to instead be used as creative cells so that creativity comes at the cost of not remembering what you did. Comment your code, people!

Does anyone know anything about parallelizing http requests in python? Currently requests are through the library.

Only reason I ask is because as of right now the care-tags top posts script takes about 25-30 minutes to run. I'd like to cut that down, significantly.

Any Bay Area C-T'ers down to form a team for the Hackathon on Memorial Day Weekend? Trying to put a team together and so far have only two people. Need like 2-3 more.

Update: got it working thanks to the grequests library (literally the requests library with support for multiple requests simultaneously).

Runtime: 1589.235 -> 296.394 (s)

allow me to sing the praises of GNU screen:

Detach server screen session on your laptop

Bring netbook into bathroom

Reattach session, and resume programming while pooping
