i bought cities skylines today because it was £5 and i very much want to play it but I only have a 2011 macbook air that quite obviously can't run it. what's my cheapest way of getting hardware that can? basically what is the cheapest PC I can buy that will run it

Do you really want to buy special-purpose hardware for only one game?

I can understand why you might not want to buy a new Mac now especially if you like Air-class laptops; the Airs now are old and the MacBook is really unsuited for gaming because it doesn't have a fan. I'd suggest waiting for WWDC '17 starting June 5 to see if Apple announces anything new if at all possible, assuming you want to stick with Apple laptops.

If you want to build a Windows gaming box, though, you probably shouldn't be building one that's bottom-dollar because it won't be able to play the next game you want to play.

If you're trying to build a windows pc then you could probably get something around $600 for just the pc that would be able to play pretty much anything out now and for the near future. I haven't looked at hardware for a while now so I don't know exactly what prices are but for around that amount you could probably build a very capable desktop. If you want to only play Cities Skylines you could get away with a pretty cheap build like somewhere in the $300 range maybe even less I'd guess, once again haven't checked prices recently but it has pretty low requirements. I know nothing about laptops my laptop is an old macbook air too.

i pretty much only play strategy or indie games, no action/fps/3d games so i imagine if i got something that can run CS i'll be good. i don't really want a gaming box, just something i can play indie games and run CAD software on

if u dont already have a windows key/ monitor/ mouse etc it will be cheaper just to buy a refurbed mid range gaming laptop and keep ur mac for public appearances

city skylines is mostly cpu intensive and u mostly want to play indy games so i'd prioritise that over the gfx card, any gtx 900m series will be fine. if u can get 950=970m you'll be able to play 2015 and prior AAA's on acceptable settings just in case

bonus of a gaming laptop too is u can hide it away after ur done, perfect for smaller places.

this months humble bundle sub early game is the witness, which I have and have beat. it is a beatitful, fun, and engaging game and a pretty decent challenge for people who like puzzles.

When I was a kid my older brother downloaded an SNES emulator on our family computer in return for letting him bring our PS2 to a friend's place.

This last year I got back into emulating to replay some of my favorite childhood games and a few others. Played Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy Tactics, Secret of Mana, tried to get through Xenogears but it's too damn long.

Currently playing original Harvest Moon and my farm setup rips. Already got 6 cows at the end of year one hell yea.

after my cyberpunk binge i'm redownloading Fallout New Vegas and a fuckload of mods. Apparently The Frontier is pretty much a new game using F:NV set in Portland, so will give that a go.
