more land means land is cheap
also our houses aren't as old as yours outside of major cities. my parents' house was built in 2003.

In england most houses built after the war suck.
Houses built before the war suck too but in different ways.

house was built in 1934, ancestors were well off lumber type people and the town hadn't really developed too much yet so they got best pick of geography.
as the story goes my great granddad built it himself, i dunno about that but i figure it was probably our wood.

My house was built in the 50s, my neighborhood used to be a Jewish summer camp (Henry Winkler used to go to camp here, supposedly) before it became houses in the 80s.

My uncle's house has got parts of it dating back to the 14th century. It's cool.
