I have to say I was a bit weirded out by the kanyexaddias collection only having the women half dressed while all the dudes were fully clothed.

I think in a time where a lot of designers are aiming for a andro approach to dressing the sexes kanyes clear separation of the sexes comes off a bit shocking. Unlike nasir mazhar or any of that crowd he's not over sexualising both genders but making the clear division, I think his saving grace however is the fact that his males weren't dressed in traditional "masculine cuts" making me more inclined to think he's celebrating the female form x lack of female specific pieces. That said it would have been cool if he dressed them exactly the same and had genderless pieces.

Why are fashion shows always about "references"

I think references are a pretty good way to analyze a show they are easy to digest.
Maybe it has something to do with that weird relationship fashion has with art. (Fashion imitates art?!)

But references seem important to analyzing a lot of art forms.
Just my two thoughts I'd like to hear from someone more qualified lol
