Vancouver Fashion Week F/W 14

Postby verilyvert » Tue Mar 25, 2014 9:55 pm

Vancouver Fashion Week's F/W 14 season ended yesterday. Here I'll try to present as much of the collections exhibited as I can find, and paraphrase some of what has been said of the different designers so as to provide a little context.

Last week was Vancouver's largest fashion week with almost 60 designers. Credit goes to Jamal Abdourahman, who founded the event 13 years ago and has persevered with it despite much criticism over the years. 2006 and 2007 were low points with just four designers presenting over two days, so it was good to see last week's success. At the opening gala it was announced that this Vancouver Fashion Week was even bigger than fake canada's (whatever that means).

I enjoyed seeing the focus on local and emerging designers, but the real draw would be the strong international presence exhibited. I think this makes VWF especially appealing for a community like care-tags, where members from all over the globe can get a look at what designers from other countries are doing. There's a chance you'll even see some talent from your area that you never heard of.

- Vancouver, Canada
A survivor of disease, amputation, and depression, JJ creates luxury handbags from Italian sourced leathers.

- fake canada, Canada
"Maida Ghide created label ANNA FORA to evoke a sense of one self into the garments one wears. Marrying contrasting fabrics in textures that excite the senses, Maida’s designs have a voice all their own. Fueled by her Eritrean background they are colourful, vibrant and dramatic." - The Province

Day 2 - Lots of local and emerging talent who were only given 15 minutes of runway time as opposed to the full 30 minutes that more established designers got. Means more shows in the day.

- Vancouver, Canada
Four students, Jesper Annerstedt (Sweden), Yicheng Chen (China), Rachel Liu (China), and Sonya Jang (Ottawa, Canada) present their works which are centered around the theme of modern architecture.

- Thunder Bay, Canada
Form fitting Satin is used in a collection she describes as an "Acceptance of self, mistake, imperfections, darkness. When the darkness descends we turn to the light inside and we embrace all that we are without shame".

- Seattle, USA
Sophie Karen was trained by Cecile Pelous, formerly of the houses of Dior and Nina Ricci. She exhibits a collection with lots of lace detailing, and mixed textures.

Na Hyun Lee - Korea
Bomber jackets, bell skirts and other stuff… I'm getting tired of these summaries.

- Vancouver, Canada
Originally from England, Jaspal Maella designs dresses, after creating them for herself for many years.

- Vancouver, Canada
Shows off her collection pantomime, which looks like it was inspired by rag doll jesters.

- Vancouver, Canada
"Crop top tweeds weaved in chunky patterns paired with grey trousers and suspenders, distressed fabrics, and cozy sweaters with knitted toques, all evoked a coastal country feel with hipster flare" - The Province

- Victoria, Canada
Trained at Central St. Martins, and now living in London. Sponsored by Niche Magazine for VFW, she showcases a collection inspired by a friend's recent trip to Mongolia.

- Korea
His F/W 14 collection "The Funeral of the Horse" uses soft structured fabrics in black, brown and cream animal prints.

Firan and Rose - UK
60s and 70s inspired collection featuring tweed pencil skirts and bell sleeve cropped blazers.

DES - Korea
His collection "Modern Knight" imagines city life as warfare, and explores how medieval armour might look in contemporary times.

- Vancouver, Canada
"Explores western culture as seen through an eastern lens, and the opposition of good versus evil". Will be presenting at MQ Vienna Fashion week in September.
