im thinking of getting a Canon 6D, but ive been reading more about rangefinders and how good they can be for street/journalism photography. can anyone explain rangefinders to me and the pros/cons? didn't get a lot out of the wiki article

Pros:
Lightweight, do well with wide angle lenses, coloured filters don't obscure stuff, can see outside the framelines

Cons:
Low amount of automation, do badly with tele lenses, "expensive"

tbh the difference between a canon 6D (assuming this is a high end dslr?) and a rangefinder (assuming film?) is huge so it's a difficult comparison. Like comparing an SUV to a sports car.

If you want to test drive a film rangefinder I can recc you a bunch that you can get for about $100 on ebay and are stonking as long as you can deal w/some caveats. I am the undisputed heavyweight champion of cheap rangefinders.

bela, thanks. yea could you point me in the right direction.

im even confused as to what a rangefinder camera IS. like, why even have a rangefinder? it's better for fast focusing or something?

debatable better for fast focusing.

The main thing is that because you don't have a mirror on the shutter you can have the rear lens elements back way closer to the film. This makes it easier to design wide angle lenses and small bodies.

If you don't want to spend too much money get a yashica 35 GTN or GTS. They're cheap as chips but a little bulky. To be honest I don't think you need to go that cheap. For you Teck I'd recommend a Yashica 35 GTX. It's the rolls royce of compact 35mm cameras from the 60s. I've been shooting with a 35 GTX for years and I'm on my second one since the last one got smashed.

If you want an alternative you could get a Canonet QL17 but I find them a bit fiddly. Same for the olympus compact RFs. The cool thing about the Yashicas is that the only mode they have is aperture priority and that's the most useful mode 99% of the time.

Go on eBay and search for a listing that says stuff like "seals have been replaced" and "I recently ran a film through this so it's working" if you want a hassle free experience. You'll probably need to bung some wire wool or foil into the battery compartment because they don't make the original batteries any more but don't let that stress you because it's super easy and the modern replacement batteries are just standard SR44s.

Feel free to msg me for a specific auction yay/nay

I'm pretty sure this is the wrong place to post this but I can't find a better thread. I don't really know anything about photography but I really enjoy styling my friends and photographing them editorial-style. Pretty shitty camera. I really liked this shot; I thought she looked kinda wild and sexy which was gratifying because she's super shy. Your guys' pictures are really great by the way. Let me know if there is a thread for this sort of thing!

Where do I get into/learn more about photography? I've been wanting to start taking pictures and stuff, but I really have no idea where to start. My parents have a fairly decent (I think?) camera, so I'd like to take advantage of that before I move out.

Some photos I took while visiting family around Christmas. Some of these are going to be in a small gallery show I have next week, which is pretty cool too.

Got the film back from a trip to the botanical gardens ages ago. I thought I was shooting negative but it turned out it was E6 so glad some of the shots came out. Insanely expensive to shoot though. 12 shots per roll and the roll cost about £35 all in. Doubt I'll shoot it again in a hurry. Colours are unfuckwithable though. It's all straight out of the camera.
