Plenty of bots these days are just poor people paid to do this kind of thing do a standard captcha is less successful. Believe sz has a yohji based one which supposedly works a little better.

Custom capchtas are a good prevention technique. The standard ones included with most phpbb installs have been long since broken by spam bots.

Sometimes I want to reply to the things people write in them, but where do I do that?

EG: Ramdom negs me and says "hey I kind of like Muse" in his comment, but if I want to say "I used to like muse actually. I was a teenager when their first two or three albums came out" where do I write that?

On the other hand the entire point of a rep system is that you don't have everyone writing posts saying "I agree" "i disagree" "this" so maybe this kind of effect is inevitable.
