Sure it was proper nail varnish.

I had some dark purple with sparkles in for my goth rebellion.

No, regular nail polish usually with help of a female friend or my girlfriend. Think the navy had sparkles.

Used to wear black suits/dark shirts a lot but also always with silver rings and occasionally painted nails for fun. Not a goth just liked the juxtaposition (it sucked). It wound up the grumpy old men at my local. Wore mascara to go partying at gay clubs too, but sadly the scene here is very boring (compared to bristol which was great fun).

Shortly after getting my job I moved into my current apartment (a grown up place) and accidentally lost my rings that i'd had for 8 years. Was deeply symbolic and I'm ok with it.
