So Shawn James just released his second full-length album. I've been following this guy for over a year now and the way he seamlessly blends blues, soul and folk is incredibly satisfying. In addition to this he is also an incredible singer. (Grew up singing choir, he was also previously the vocalist for a deathmetal band I believe.)

Here's a link to his album. It starts off very bluesy, with more folk towards the end. I definitely feel like this guy deserves to be more popular than he is. To me, he is honestly on par with if not better than Bon Iver. (Here's his first album, too: http://shawnjamessoul.bandcamp.com/album/shadows)

My favorite song off of the album is "A Good Friend is Hard to Find" which is extremely melancholic and almost mournful. In some ways, it reminds me of "To Build a Home" by The Cinematic Orchestra, or "Delicate" by Damien Rice.

The album's not necessarily innovative or groundbreaking, but it is simplicity done extremely well. Every song is absolutely dripping with atmosphere, and the way he sings switches from being rough and declarative to being like a soothing lullaby. At times, it's like listening to a particularly enthusiastic preacher screaming in to the woods; this is only accentuated by the clapping and stomping percussion that's used to incredible effect all over his music, as well as the heavily layered vocals in some songs.

my tip for meeting smaller musicians (i.e., not playing sold out stadiums; more likely playing dive bars or unitarian church venues) after concerts is to go wait near the drivethru of a nearby fast food place

doesn't always work but I've had great success just standing in the parking lots of taco bells, in n outs, etc., and whaddya know the whole band is rolling through

there's plenty of trans-atlantic hip hop which can give you quite a different taste than what you'll find stateside, but there's nothing quite like the stuff down under. influenced by 90s "golden era" rap and hiphop, funk, and soul, it uses a host of organic sounds in its beats - flutes, drums, pianos, chants and of course beautiful record scratching. throughout the 00's groups like Hilltop Hoods and Bliss n Eso pioneered the aussie hip hop sound with a three piece set, two MCs, one DJ.



these group's influence carries over to the age of high definition where there's loads of new talent flooding the scene. with a personality all its own, there's a certain endearing, aloof tone to the genre nowadays that makes it incredibly fun listening. then there's the voice. the australian accents seem to lend themselves to an out of this world flow:



the subject matter channels a The Streets like personality, songs are often about common day to day shit like or your asshole boss:



australian hip hop doesn't take itself too seriously, hits, albums, and artists bubble to the surface of their music scene (don't get me started on that) and retain in the deep memory fans have with the genre. i don't know if it's the beats, accents, lyrics, or what, but the whole scene has a certain magic to it that mixes with its unapologetic groundedness and creates something truly special.

I don't have all my music on one platform sadly. Had like 600 on iTunes. Moved to Spotify. Shitton of CDs. Decent amount of records, some casettes.

I have a Google music subscription to stream music. Before that it was pretty small, probably under 10k songs total. Anyone else with spotify/rdio/google music experience a difference in how they consume music ? I listen to more now than I did before I started streaming but I also listen less intently. Like, I listened to a couple rolling stones albums for the first time on purpose today and I barely remember any of the songs.

Streaming music has made owning a very large collection far easier.

I do like the new(ish) spotify feature where you can save albums and view them by cover, that's pretty much what I do when I want to listen to one. Singles? Bah, they can go in playlists.

I really like Rdio. I like how it has a "New Releases" area where it shows the album covers and the names. Flipping through it reminds me of flipping through CDs in the record store and just picking out ones with cool covers or cool names, but with the added benefit that I can instantly hear what's behind the names and covers now.

I'll say I consume music differently now that I have a spotify subscription. Previously I'd just throw my iTunes/iPod on shuffle and flip through and listen and if I came across something that made me want to listen to a specific track or album I would do so. Now I can't really do that as much as I don't have one huge "playlist" of all the music I like/had in spotify so it's much more deliberate type of music choosing. I can't just set and forget as much anymore, mainly because I haven't put the effort into curating a big cool playlist of everything.

Semi related - I've started collecting records of artists/albums I really enjoy. Since I haven't paid for much music since I was like 14 and now I have semi disposable income I can use to buy records. I tend to buy mainly from merch tables at shows I go to (because I like to think the artist gets a higher percentage of the price when I do so, I have no idea if this is actually true) or from local record shops because it's fun to just take a few hours out of the day and go flip through bins and bins of records.

Does anyone else here listen to metalcore or am i alone in actually enjoying it. The scene has gotten better in the past year compared to when it was in the spotlight and every new band was a 'christian' metalcore band. seems like the over saturation of bands lowered the intensity and energy behind the music in an attempt to appeal to a wider audience. like bands were starting to abuse auto tune and synths.

Let's talk about Jazz, post about your favourite Jazz album/composition/musician.

I finally listened to Mingus's The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady and it just blew me away. The whole thing seems to have everything I love about the genre: great solos, chords and harmonies all while sounding very fun to play. The piano openings of tracks B and C are incredible and the Spanish guitar appearing out of nowhere is great fun and makes for a nice musical surprise. It's probably the most high-energy Jazz album I've heard.

Jazz-wise, my favourite band is Bohren & Der Club of Gore. I love dark jazz above all, it's really brooding music, unlike anything I've heard previously.

If we're talking about traditional jazz, I love Grant Green, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis. Idle Moments is my favourite jazz album so far, but I really need to explore the genre further.

Sometimes I think about WU LYF's early demise and it makes me sad. Anyone have any suggestions for similar bands? All I've found that sort of reminds me of WU LYF is the band Holy Esque and Ellery James Robert's solo single.

At work coming up we have From Indian Lakes and Ice Nine Kills most notably. Saw Tigers Jaw/Dads/Touche Amore and it was seriously amazing, I think I posted about it before.


I'm into them, my friend has a lot of their discography but he has literally thousands of records so it's safe to say he has a lot of bands' discographies. I want to start collecting cassettes.

Pizza time is by-far my favorite band atm just because I love listening to their "spanish pop punk" at work because all my managers think I'm crazy for it.

So Bleachers is a new band that just came out with a CD (Strange Desire) last Tuesday. It's the guitarist from fun.'s side project, and I really find myself enjoying it. Should definitely check it out, it's a pretty great alternative/indie album.

I'm extra thrilled that they'll be playing at Lolla this summer, which is in less than 2 weeks and I'm so excited for the festival.

Hope this isn't inapp. for this thread but we're going to see the NBHD tomorrow in PHX and she wants to get their early af but I'm not too fond of sitting in the sun for 3-4 hours in 110+ to then go into a venue that's sold out full of sweaty people.

Just need something fun/easy to pass the time. We picked out a place to get some food before we wait but still.
