I'm getting a couple of those vermont flannels next week, trying to figure out sizing right now.

Went to AA today and tried on a bunch of stuff to get my sizing right. Ended up grabbing some stuff on the sale rack at 70% off. Got two poplin short sleeves and a bleached denim shirt. Pretty much set on tops for school after I get my flannels. Looking at sweaters next.

Another option at the upper end of your budget is going custom from white's or nick's, which would definitely fit the sizing issue you have. cathpath did a write up on those over at

One more option that might not work because of sizing/cost is meermin, but I think they're certainly worth checking out.

I wear black tie ~5 times a year due to the uni I go to. Got through first year with my 6th form black ill fitting beater — though that's recently given up the ghost. On one hand thinking I should invest on the other, it is uni where it can get messy, should I really be concerned about having proper black tie, 90% of people are in ill-fitting M&S notch lapel jobs. If I invest I'm thinking going SuitSupply, any experience with their eveningwear over here?

5 times a year is a lot, but it's a bit of a sketch proposition to "invest" as chances are that your adult life will have 5 opportunities to wear full on black tie ever. You'll probably end up going to whatever event requires black tie less as your studies kick into a higher gear too.

SuitSupply looks decent, though it's super dinner suit ish and you can't really dress it down due to the amount of satin, which put me off. I feel like a peak lapel, one button suit in a dark colour is a better proposition than serious satin covered dinner suit because you can also just wear it with a normal tie for evening lounge suit occasions (which can be as numerous as you want in life really, evening in a fancy restaurant etc etc).

It's terrible to say it, but I think midnight blue is also a bit better than black because it's more "versatile". It's a shitty tightrope to walk. On the one hand the thing that makes black tie so special is the fact you can only wear it to black tie events, but on the other hand who can afford to splash out on something that never gets worn, and is getting worn less and less as the years go by?

I'm very happy with my peak lapel no satin suit, but it was kind of a huge extravagance that I couldn't recommend a second year uni student bought into. Plus if I had my time again with the pier wu sale prices I would just buy her double breasted suit and wear that with a bow tie to black tie events, which would be cool as fuck.

COS sometimes do a tuxedo ish option in their winter collection, but it will probably have some non standard effect, like no breast pocket and skinny minimal lapels. I think their stuff looks cool but if you want to get traditionalist about it then it doesn't really cut the mustard.

I don't know, I've worn black tie *not* just at school/uni events a few times before and I suspect 21st's may be black tie as that's the upcoming year.. It's a hard one to call as if there are quite a few *black tie* events which I suspect, I'll feel kind of silly not getting a proper dinner suit as I've got another suit I can wear for a lounge suit due to my work (Fintech's odd business casual requirements).

I tried on the SuitSupply blue tux, though it's definitely not a midnight blue, more of an electric blue which kind of gives off the "Hey guys, I've watched Skyfall!" jizz. The construction is great though (half canvas, half un-inter-lined so no delamination over time, with S110's which is a great mix of durability/silkyness for a tux wool). Just the peak lapel I've not tried on, which it's lapel size looks a little mafioso... Hope their f/w has a shawl black suit. Even tempted by their all in for £500 deal as my tux shirt/bowtie are dead right now, but the shoes seem a little excessive (though if kept properly could last a lifetime).

I'll keep an eye out for pier wu and COS thanks.

I don't think the height would be a detriment. They'd be half covered by your trousers most of the time. Colour combination is pretty fun.

So where do I get some mid to high rise wool flannel trousers in medium/charcoal grey OR brown this fall? I'm open to luxire but not a huge fan of the color fabric they use, looks a bit too much like sweatpants for my taste. Preferably would like to spend less than 100 bucks on these, totally lost at the moment.

I also haven't the foggiest on which trousers to get, I'll probably just settle on some J. Crew main line navy and gray dress pants, but it really ticks me off that J. Crew refuses to embrace high waist. >:(

I have so much hope for Uniqlo's next season, I tried some sale rack pleated gray wool pants on while in San Fran in May and they were the itchiest, most disrespectful pants to ever grace my thighs.

That was my immediate consideration when I felt the itch. I guess this winter I would really love having wool pants with tights under them, maybe I'll just get the Uniqlo trousers no matter how they feel, and buy some long johns from Uniqlo while I'm at it.
