I need a new computer, or at the very least a new hard drive; I've been running w/ <30GB free for about 6 months now. Legitimately had to uninstall a bunch of games/programs in order to download a TV show (Cowboy Bebop). A nice 250 GB solid state would be awesome.

Thinking about making the jump to Linux... the only things stopping me is my parents' data on here and video games but thanks to the Humble Bundle I think I might even be okay on that second part. Ughh decisions.

Do you use *nix at uni at all rj? If not getting yourself proficient at it will be a real plus point for your career.

Can always install dual boot if you need windows for anything. That said, I stick to windows myself.

Yup, most work for my classes are on Ubuntu, though we don't do much terminal besides gedit and subversion.

I think I'm gonna make the plunge in the near future, I just need to take care of all my data beforehand.

I've been mainlining ubuntu for years but I guess I always have a windows install to go to for games or whatever.

Family computer has been straight ubuntu single boot for a long time though and it's generally fine unless you're into video editing or something.

All that most people do these days is log onto the internet right? I mean you can get chrome for linux so it's barely noticable until you want to do something on your local filessystem.

Though if you get a powerful linux router, you can just host/stream your files via your home intranet/network + internet, sans an extra computer if speed is not an issue

if I had control of the internet/router, I'd go this route – as I'm pretty much bringing my laptop everywhere I go, and I sometimes use public computers. Plus you can control torrents and what not by logging in/connecting from anywhere to your router .

Update on linux: looked at a few distros, decided I'd go with Fedora.

Had to shrink the Windows partition but it threw an error. Logged back into Windows (thankfully still working fine) and tried shrinking from there. Turns out there's about 3 GB free on it that I can actually shrink off (due to immovable files or some shit). So for now it looks like I'm either stuck with Windows or need to get all my data off and just make the jump to Fedora.

@freddy I'd do that but I don't know that I've got the spare parts laying around, here at least. Might be able to hook something up at home either over Thanksgiving or winter break.
