While we have a WAYLT thread, I don't really think it's that conducive to discussion and every time I open a thread my laptop shudders in horror trying to load all those music links and we post songs but never really talk about why we care about them. So what about just a general thread to chat about music and our feelings about it?

quick fake canada update.

i know we're all sad that frank ocean didn't drop an album this summer but daniel caesar just dropped a full-length (it's on spotify, even!) and it's absolutely fantastic. this man is often compared to frank ocean in terms of style and ability - if you like rnb with interesting, "mellow" production and fantastic lyrics check this man out. pitchfork actually just started , which is fantastic - can't wait to read their review of Pilgrim's Paradise.

on the rap side of things, i'd like to make sure you guys know about jazz cartier (jacuzzi). mans poppin off now, his next release is gonna be huge not even joking. the youth are BIG onto him, get ahead of the curve and take a tip...if you wanna find out how people-who-aren't-drake live in fake canada, this is what you gotta listen to: "I’m from fake canada but they call it the 6". dropped an album marauding in paradise earlier this year which got him a ton of attention outside of the city and he's already started dropping projects from his new project. check some choice cuts out below the spoiler (biased towards bangers and not the more introspective stuff he does)

This music has been an obsession for me lately, plus it helps that there are loads of this genre from the past 2 years(the one above is from 2001 but was repressed a couple months ago, and it's really dub techno but it's really fucking good so whatever)
I've included some workshop songs below, but you might also want to look into which I've recently rediscovered to be similar to this stuff.
Hunee's Hunch Music is different, but I feel like if you could appreciate this music you might like his stuff.

Would you all say it's inherently wrong/immoral/whatever to listen to music when the artist is known to have neo nazi/otherwise horrible views even if the lyrics don't reflect that, especially so if they do?

i think it's wrong to support that artist (go to shows, buy merch, buy album, stream their album on spotify?, tell your friends how cool they are) if you think their views aren't those of someone you support. dont think you have to feel guilty about liking or listening to the music, esp if you already own it.

i dont think it's any different than if you found out, say, a super sexist person owned a coffee shop - i wouldn't go there or recommend it to others but if i already owned a bunch of coffee beans i bought there i would still use them

I mean sure but I think there's a pretty big difference between subtle patriarchal undertones (or even obvious ones) like you'd find in Disney movies and straight up rapping about beating women like you'd hear in a biggie song, and I'd imagine most people would agree that if there is a line it probably exists somewhere between the two

I'm slowly coming to the realization that rock music is dying. I've been pretending for years that alternative/experimental bands like TV On the Radio and Sleigh Bells are keeping the rock spirit alive, but I don't know anymore. Everyone seems to be slipping into one of two camps: really boring "rock" music, or more experimental, oftentimes electronic sounds, thus falling into altogether new genres. In my opinion, nothing will ever be as real and raw as bands like Violent Femmes, Pixies, Gang of Four. Bands who evoked this really rich energy with simple instruments (albeit not simple instrumentation). Does anyone know of any bands that are still keeping that energy going?

EDIT: It seems like everyone's disagreeing with me on this, which is fine. I'm just not sure why. What bands are you guys listening to? I'm not saying that other music is bad, I really dig FKA Twigs, Azaela Banks, The Knife, etc. But none of them are rock, they're entirely different genres.
