How did I miss out on a running thread for so long? I'm all about running. Going for my first marathon later this fall, though I just beat up my knee pushing too hard in a twenty miler yesterday. I'm taking it easy for a couple days and will hopefully be back onto my training plan soon.

Did you run the 50k or 50 miler?

Dope man! I had some knee problems as well, it's super demoralizing, but rest and stretching is really all you can do.

I just did the 50k. Figured I should dip my toes in before doing something crazy. I ran 5:50, was in 8th thru 13 miles, then cramped up really bad. Finished 33 overall, 4th in my age group. My planned pacing had me coming in around the 4:30-5:00 range, but the cramps put an end to that. I've had no problems on trail races up to 14 miles before that, so I think I need to really take this winter to work on my flexibility, do some strength training, and maybe work on my nutrition.

Think my last races this year are a fun 5k, possibly a trail half marathon just for fun, then a turkey trot around thanksgiving.

Running club! I've gotten very into running recently this is exciting. My goal (which i've told no one til now) is running a trail 25k in the spring. Currently running ~20 very slow miles a week. I'll get there >.<

Just finished my first marathon last weekend!

Image

My knee injury hurt my performance a lot more than I'd hoped. About halfway into the race I started getting a lot of pain, forcing me to to walk-run much of the second half. Not fun. My goal time prior to getting injured was a 3:50 and I ended up finishing at 5:20. I'm kind of bummed that I spent four months training only to have such a poor performance, but I'm staying optimistic about it. Probably going to take it easy this winter and heal properly, then maybe go for another marathon next fall.

That's an ambitious schedule, but looks great. It's going to be a fun year with that many trail races. I still need to work on mine. Did you make the registration for the Covered Bridges Half? I just registered!

No way! I did as well! Going to be my second year running it. My dad lives up in that area, let me know if you wanna hang out before/after.

Sure, that would be great! It was a spur of the moment decision, so if you're familiar with the area I might ask you about travel recommendations as the race gets closer.

Who else is running things this spring summer? Who else is excited for it to get warm again? Who else got their ass kicked by their long run last week?

Image
(Said long run)

If you're new to running, signing up for a race is a great way to stay motivated! Anything up to a half marathon should be totally doable for even an absolute beginner, given a good training effort!

Also, goal setting! What are your goals for this season?

Mine are:
New Half Marathon PR
Finish top 5 at an ultra
Complete a 50 Mile race

Updated race schedule (no way I actually run all these, but SO MANY GOOD RACES NEAR ME!):

I ran a ten miler this past Sunday, which was a challenge race between all of the running clubs in Maryland and DC. My club got stomped, but it was a great time and I got to meet some really fast runners. Official times aren't posted yet, but I think I ran a 1:25:xx. Not my best time ever, but it was a very hilly course with gusting wind, so I'm not too dissatisfied.

Goal number one is to start using Strava. I never run with a watch so it's tough for me, but it sounds like a great community and lets you interact with a bunch of other runners, both locally and globally.

Goal number two is to run a 1:40:00 half marathon. I think this is a little too aggressive, but I'm planning a full year of races with quite a few half marathons, so I'all see what I can manage.

Upcoming races: Shamrock 5k on March 12th, Oldfields Half on April 1st, Ragnar Richmond weekend of April 29th, Frederick Half on May 7th, and Covered Bridges Half on June 4th. I also might do the Urban Bourbon Half in Louisville on October 21st, and I still need to decide on a fall marathon (suggestions welcome). Last year I also ran the Rehoboth Half, which was basically a giant party with some running involved. A friend rents a house for this every year, so I might be running it again this year.

PRed my 10k on Sunday in the sun run (local newspaper's race with 40-50k participants every year) somehow, 41:42. Started in the wrong wave so I ran through literally several thousand people (seeding is all fucked up for this, I shouldn't be passing elderly people/kids). I imagine the congestion added at least 15s so I'm quite pleased with that. Puts me well on track for my under 40 goal, given that I was slow to get back into things after getting sick in January.

More immediately though, I'm running the bmo 1/2 in 12 days and I pretty much haven't ever run farther than 12-13. Went out this morning and did a relaxed ~16, felt like I had a few more k in me no prob but I don't want to increase too fast. Gonna go do something around 18-19 on Thursday then hopefully pre run the race course on the weekend.

Yayyyyyyy running!

I ran my preseason 50k in 4:21, got 12th place overall, super happy. I also picked up a coach cause there's a lot dumber things that I spend money on, so I'm hoping to see some good improvements. He's already got me hitting hill repeats and interval workouts, so I'm excited to see my times.

Next big race is Covered Bridges Half Marathon with ! Hoping for something in the lower 1:20s, we'll have to see how that goes...

I also had a great time in VT! It was a very nice race, lots of crowd support and some beautiful scenery. I think there were even some cows cheering at one point.

Now that I've had a couple weeks of rest I've started marathon training again. I'm not signed up for anything yet, but someone in my local running group invited me to join a group that's running Athens in November and it's pretty tempting. Hopefully I'll also find time to fit in a local trail 50k, which would be my first ultra!
